Louisiana shooters: Louisiana Shooting Law questions

I am about to move to Louisiana. I have some property there, soon to be 13-15 acres). I've been told by two difference sources that there is a state law in Louisiana that says you can't shoot a firearm within 1000 ft of another residence.

Is this true or false?

If it is true, then does it mean you can't shoot the gun in the direction within 1000 ft of another residence (with a backstop and woods in between obviously) or does it mean the gun can't go off within a 1000 ft radius?

What are my options?

Most people I've ask have never even heard of such a law. One person told me that it's probably a law that applies only if someone complains. I've mentioned that I was planning to put up a backstop for shooting to several people, none of them expressed any concern and in fact seemed to think it just fine. I tried looked over the various state laws on Packing.org and the NRA website and could find no such law.

My property is backed up to a hunting lease which contains hundreds of acres of woods, but there are other houses in the area. There is, as far as I can tell on the map, about 2 acres in the center where I would be outside of 1000 ft from the nearest house....but it makes things a little difficult in utilizing the land how I want in some ways. Law or no law, I won't be pointing any muzzel towards anyone's house 1000 ft or not, backstop or not. It will be at a backstop backed up to the hunting lease woods. I want good relations with my neighbors but I also want to be able to do what I want on my own property.

Even though the general consensus in the area strikes me as "sure go ahead we don't mind" all it takes is one wimpy soccer mom to wet her pants and call the sheriff. No more shooting.:(

How does this law apply and does it even exist?

I am sure there is a law about distance from another residence, though I don't know what it is (500ft here). Also, you might want to check on the city codes etc... Inside city limits are usually a no-no.

Where are you moving to in LA?

While there is no state law to that effect, some parishes (counties) here do have some restrictive firearms use laws. I'd suggest you write to the Police Jury (county commissioners) of the parish you are moving to and get a clarification or ruling from them.

I'm from Louisiana and I've never heard of that law either. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I could be a particular Parish's law or it could be an old law that's never enforced unless someone complains.

Good choice in states to move to BTW. What part of the state are you heading to?

I will be in Morehouse Parish (not in any city limits). Not so good if the only place you can shoot is if you have a big farm.....(don't really mean that...I love that area, half my family is up there and I've half my life there between summers and Christmases growing up and even moreso now)

I'm hesitant to ask the Sheriff or Police Jury as I'm afraid any LE agency would so "NO" just at the idea of any citizen asking to shoot anywhere other than a regulated indoor/outdoor public range. They may so "no I can't" regardless of what the law says. Even if they do say it's okay, I'm afraid they will make a lot to do about it regulating what I can and can't shoot, how much money I have to put in it, saying I have to get some kind of dang state or parish permit, saying I have to submit X,Y & Z report on it every month. I just want to set up a good backstop and have fun on my property with friends and neighbors....that's all. I'm getting the H E double L out of Houston to get away from that kind of stuff.

Darn it! It's going to be a little more difficult than I thought. I just checked an areial photo on mapquest and spotted a house a little closer than I thought. will be cutting it real close to be within the law. I will have to have a 50 yd range and not 100 yd range.

I've never heard of this, but it could be a local regulation somewhere.

You should not worry too much, though. If you are out in the country / swamp your neighbors will probably be shooters and can let you know the way things are done.
