Lost Posts

Apologies to all-
It seems the brain trust that runs the TFL Server took the system down to install a memory upgrade early today. Naturally, they didn't bother to notify us....we're only the guys that foot the bills!

To add insult to injury, they decided to partition the hard drive while it was down...thus erasing all information on the system!!!

In a continued effort to demonstrate their unswerving incompetence, they then realized they hadn't made a backup copy. Again, without notifying us, they restored the system with a backup from two days ago!!!! All posts after about 8PM on April 2nd have been lost.

We are embarrassed by the sheer stupidity of this action. It flies in the face of the most basic rules of system maintenance.

Well, it does prove Murphy is alive and well. For that matter, is the new server run by that up and coming web company ... murphy.com? ;)

Don't worry Rich ... a lot of us have been on TFL so long now, we forget what we said anyway. ;)

Thanks for all your hard work to give us so much. TFL is a terrific resource. Thank you. :)

Regards from AZ

Aw heck life happens, you grumble about it for a while then you get on with living it out.

Glad TFL is here, despite glitches :)

Hey, no problem; Just file a freedom of information act request with the FBI for the missing posts.

Yikes!

That's a pretty brainless move on your hosting company's part!

You and your crew keep up the good work, Rich. We really appreciate it, and don't mind the hiccups. I wonder why Glock Talk wasn't affected?

Stuff like this is why corporations are nervous about the idea of ASP's (application service providers). People like to know they have good backups, and not have to depend on the competence of an outside organization.

Hey Rich
Is it because of the upgrade that I could not log on for about 5 hour today. All I got was some Taiwan Trade.com page. I thought I was having problem. But all ok now.

Good one Brett! LOL! That'd be one way of getting a copy of the posts back.

Rich,

You almost lost me to Taiwan Trade. The only problem is that they don't sell guns. If they did, I'd probably be made in China anyhow......Is that where the server originates? ;)

You know, Rich, I think Brett is on to something here ... Bill Clinton or Al Gore probably have our missing posts!! ;)

'Course, they'll deny it ... ;)

GlockTalk hasn't been affected because Eric's smarter than me. He hasn't put GT on the Server yet. We get to be the guinea pigs.

Taiwan Trade is, in fact, the server owner. Whether we stay here or not remains to be seen. It's much faster than the old connection, but I am not a happy camper about the level or expertise of service. The concept of a commercial server that doesn't have an auto backup schedule is frightening.

I'm with 4V50 Gary. I gotta Pulitzer Prize winner out there somewhere in no-backup land. Dang!

RWK had a good comment down in Suggestions and Feedback Forum that might apply to more than one of us. He told Rich he was glad of the lost posts because of one of his that, on second thought, was too sarcastic and he wished he hadn't made! Oh, thank God I've never done that!

Hang in there, Rich.

Sensop--

Keep posting-- You will. ;)

That's why I LOVE that Delete Post option, and use it pretty often. (On myself, mostly!)

I've gotta say, Rich, it's a trade-off, because the download times are far better on this server than the old one!

Easier said that done, but I'd look for a different vendor. IMHO this kind of incompetence borders on the criminal.

My last 30 years have been programming for many companies, and while the admin people would occasionally cause us some small problems, none of them EVER pulled anything like this.

It's no less aggravating from this end to try and pull up the board, and when it does come up, find that the post you were looking for is gone.

If you have to stay with these yoyos, ask for a refund for the down time, at a minimum
and seek non-performance penalties in the future.

Jessica it may be gone but not forgotten. As long as you have me around you'll never know when the imfamious "cow incident" may be repeated in these forums. :D :D :D
