LA City Council is scheduled to consider two ordinances.
1st ordinance - would completely ban the sale of ammunition (file no. 99-1581). This is being promoted by Councilmember Hernandez, through his Legislative Deputy David Hersch.
2nd ordinance - would require a $15 fee, buyer's license, background check, and waiting period before ammunition could be purchased, raising the price on a $1.00 box of .22 ammunition to $16.00 (file no. 94-0514). This is being promoted by Councilmember Michael Feuer (a candidate for LA City Attorney and leader in LA gun ban efforts) through his Deputy Daniel Hinerfeld.
Councilmembers Feuer and Hernandez intend to promote these ordinances throughout LA County, making this a county wide issue. They claim that these ordinances are needed because criminals are buying ammunition illegally in the City. HOWEVER ; LAPD's actual records, obtained by NRA/CRPA attorneys, show that out of a total of 1,500 LAPD spot checks of ammo sales registration forms (which must be filled out in LA for every ammunition sale) only one prohibited person bought ammo. And despite LAPD's request, gun ban advocate District Attorney Gil Garcetti (who is up for reelection) declined to enforce the existing laws against felons buying ammunition and refused to prosecute that case!
You can monitor the City Council's schedule at the City's website: or by calling Councilmember Miscikowski, who is in charge of scheduling the upcoming hearings. Please call the City Council and their Legislative Deputies, to ask questions, confirm hearing dates (which may change on short notice), get hearing locations and directions, and voice your opposition repeatedly as the ordinances progress. Attend and speak at the hearing(s) if possible.
Even if you don't live in the City of LA you should take action.
