LOP and POA -- Calling all SG Techies...

Take on older shotgun with a downward slopping comb, say 30%. Say the existing Point of Aim serves up a 50/50 pattern. Now add 3/4" to the LOP (e.g, with a spacers and a rubber pad). The math says the gun, when mounted, will put the barrel about 3/8" higher (or put another way, the cheek would hit the stock about 3/8" closer to the butt). This effectively lowers the rear sight (i.e., your eye) by 3/8". Question: Even over 25 yards, wouldn't that drastically raise the Point of Aim, causing the gun to shoot very low, e.g. 10/90? If so, is there anyway to fix this besides raising the comb by bending or adding a comb pad or making the comb adjustable? thanks!

The idea of changing lop is to make the gun "fit" you. By this I mean, If you close your eyes and mount the gun, when you open your eyes, you should see the bead and no barrel (most shooters want this sight picture).
I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish. I think you wanna make the gun shoot shoot the same even though you wanna change the length of pull?

Making the comb adjustable won't do it ......

The adjustable comb is still at the same angle ( to use your 30 degree example ) ...

Adjustable combs / on angled comb guns ...make little or no sense to me. You need to level out the comb. The cheapest way to do that is with a comb pad / that you can slide back and forth ( put it on with black elec tape ) ....then when you have it exactly where you want it / peel off the adhesive cover and stick it on the comb. Its about a $ 40 fix ....

Custom stocking the gun is expensive ( although it depends on the gun).

Theoretically, you're correct. In reality the shooter would probably just hold his face a little higher on the comb -- our necks are fairly flexible. One of the reasons stocks are pitched it to fit various folks. Given an off the shelf gun, you can work the stock to find a position that sort of fits you. The straighter the stock the less likely you can shoot an ill fitting one.

Those of us who follow the marketing trends have noticed some significant changes in stocks in the past 20-years. Like trap stocks, "sporting stocks" are becoming straighter. Also, more and more guns are coming with adjustable check pieces and/or shim kits to custom fit the stock to the shooter. It used to be only serious shooters would make the effort to have a gun fit to them. Then, as now, many folks shoot guns that are designed for the average shooter, or a youth model. When was the last time you heard a local gun shop offer stock bending? Many's the time we've had an OP looking for someone to help him get a correct stock fit.

I have a very long lop on all my shotguns. The way I compensated for it (on the guns I lengthened myself) is with an adjustable butt pad from Morgan. It has a metal plate that screws onto the wooden butt of your gun. Onto that is a rubber pad that is adjustable up or down on the metal plate. Cabelas sells them for 32 bucks.
