Loose revolver barrel

The barrel is not tight on my Cimarron Cattleman single action, and finger tight the front sight goes way past vertical. How can I tighten the barrel and align the sights? Are there shims made for that purpose?

take it to a smith

I would take to a smith that has the barrel clamp and receiver wrench to match your gun and let him tighten the barrel. He may end up having to index the barrel with the sight as well. This is a job only for someone with the right equipment.

Send it back

If you take it to a smith he will have to:

remove the barrel
set back the barrel shoulder
reinstall the barrel
index the barrel
recut the forcing cone
test fire

That comes to about $175-$200.

Cimmaron screwed it up, make them fix it. Note that it may take quite a while, especially if it has to go back to Italy (it would probably be cheaper fot hem to just send you a new revolver)!!

loose bbl.

Dear shooter:
If a shim would correct this it would be O.K. to do it. The problem would be a possible (probable) increase in the cylinder gap - as long as it wasn't over .006 it would be O.K.
Some fellas use a dull tubing cutter to set back the shoulder but I have misgivings asbout this.
If you fit a new bbl to it be sure that the cylinder gap is set no more than .004. A single action bbl. really doesn't need to be screwed in by a 500 lb. gorilla - just a good seat or two and then mill for an original f.s. or add a ramp. Also make sure about the forcing cone!
