Loose forearm on Benelli Nova?

I have no experience with shotguns. I have only shot rifles, but I am curious about shotguns. Yesteday I handled a Nova pump action shotgun at a gun shop and I noticed a lot of "play" in the forearm. It this normal for a pump action shotgun? I expected a tighter fit, similar to pistol slides.
 
All pumpguns except the revered 870 make more noise than a tin can on a stock fence,John(G).

Actualy, the Novs seem more noisy than most, tho I've only been around a few examples,so far.

Most pumps make some kind of noise when shaken.
 
Thanks for the response. Couple of follow up questions.

Is the "looseness" to allow faster pumping, or is it an artifact of making a the gun more economical with greater tolerances?

Doesn't the movement of the forend interfere with sighting?

It is the result of how the action bars are attached

They are held in place by two small allen screws in the forend. The tolerance is there to allow some minor twisting without causing the forend to bind. Nobody I know can pump a shotgun stright back without a t least a small amount of twisting in the forend. This is totally normal in the Nova, and mine exhibits the same play you describe. Don't let this small feature influence your purchase, as the Nova is a great shotgun, with a very simple robust design.

Try putting sticky side velcro strips on the pump handle it the noise bothers you. We did this with several issue guns for a PD.
