Looking to get a practice gun

I'm considering a practice rifle, something that with shoot pretty well around 100 yards for under $400. I want to get a .22lr, since the price of ammo is my main motivation. I want something that will last me a long time.

I've heard only good things about savage, and the top contender in my mind right now is the savage mark II BV

Has anyone used one of these? And if so, is it accurate enough out to use as a reliable practice rifle?

Another possible choice would be the savage 64 BTV. I'm hesitant on this for two reasons. First, it is semi automatic and I'm afraid that might have a negative affect on the accuracy (and on my self control). Second, it doesn't have the accutrigger.

For roughly the same price, which would be the better rifle for some target practice? I'm open to suggestions for other rifles as well.

With a bolt action action or a break action single shot, you don't have to worry about a particular round having feeding problems. If it has a magazine, I prefer the detachable box magazine.

I have a Savage Mk II in .22LR and it is plenty accurate. I also have a Ruger 10/22 that is also plenty accurate.

Savage has been making 22 bolt guns forever and a day and they have it down pat, of course so does everybody else;).

What type 'practice' are you looking to do?
For general marksmanship the MarkII series is a good choice. The MarkII FVT is an iron sighted rifle that can also be scoped. It's purpose is an entry level position shooting rifle but can double as a heavy barrel scoped rifle.

General marksmanship, shooting confidence, good trigger control, maintaining consistent sight picture between shots, breathing control, basically anything that has to do with shooting a bolt action rifle. I will be putting a scope on it. I don't have as much experience shooting as I would like to, and it's just too darn expensive to use my .30-06 frequently enough. I don't necessarily "need" the practice rifle to be bolt action, but I am more comfortable with bolt action rifles and that is what I shoot most frequently.

Another vote for the Savage Mk II. I bought it for the exact same reason, just to practice and fine-tune my mechanics. My groups have shrank since I used it for this purpose and who would have known that shooting .22LR rifles could be so much fun? :D

I bought a Marlin 891TS. Look it up on here and you will see everyone who has one is very happy. Finish is not perfect, but I am very happy with accuracy and find it a great option for 22lr practice. There is a detachable box magazine alternative. Considerably cheaper than Savage rifles.

I have a Marlin 981T too that is more accurate than my buddies 10/22 by a long shot. Absolute tack driver. Shot them both today as a matter of fact.

I'll cast my vote in favor of the CZ 452 line (if you can find them, whittakers guns may still have a few) or the new 455 line with the interchangeable barrels.

Very nicely built rifles, they shoot better then I do (sub moa on my best days with CCI standard velocity) and can be had for right about $400 after the FFL fees if needed. The 455 is actually a bit cheaper then the 452, but the 455 is new and there are more aftermarket parts and the knowledge base is larger on how to tune them.

Edit: I left out the 453 line, it has a set trigger where the 452 and 455 triggers are normal, but adjustable.

As always, ignore MSRP. Whittakers is usually a fair bit cheaper then Bud's, assuming you use Buds for pricing.

I personally own a 452 American and a 452 Varmint, love them to death, would never consider selling either.

none other than a 10/22 mine is absolutely great. you can get them in any configuration and accessories are endless. inexpensive to shoot and buy, easy to clean and maitain, and built like a rock
