Looking to beat the heat

FL today was a SAUNA while shooting sporting clays this morning. In trying to beat the heat, I had purchased a wrap that you are supposed to soak in cold water so it swells up and then it goes around your neck like a bandana. Well, it doesn't work that great - but I remember similar products that DO work well.

If someone has a site that sells a good one, please let me know.

Yep

Dude:

And, you are north of me. I was at the Okeechobee Range yesterday. Can you say S-A-U-N-A? way, way too hot for first week of May............

man up ....quit your whining ...:D ...put a hat on and carry more water ...

it was 40 degrees in Seattle yesterday evening...I'm freezing my butt off out here .....(although it is dry / and we're heading for the mid 60's over the weekend ).....

but seriously, I've never seen one of those hang around your neck gadgets work very well. I'd suggest you try one of these .... ( the 1100 is a nice vehicle - and they're around $20,000).

Aw GEEZ Jim, then I need the A/C kit for it, the trailer, and the the damn truck to pull it all.......................You got me going from a buck to 30 thou...........:D:D

today was brutal, tomorrow more of the same though I FINALLY got the other half to go shooting tomorrow - both shotgun and metallic (got to break that P7 in some more)

You guys in Seattle have NO idea what humidity AND heat can do...........

Your bionic shoulder would do best in AZ...................;)

I live in Fort Worth, Texas. 30 miles from Dallas, and next door to hell. People that haven't lived here think it is a "dry heat". BS! Granted, it ain't quite New Orleans, or Houston with regard to humidity, but it ain't far from it.

"If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent Texas and live in Hell." General Phillip Henry Sheridan

Problem with those keep you cool things is they rely on evaporation to cool you down. That means they would work well in Arizona or New Mexico, but not in NE Texas or Florida.

I have found that the best thing I can do for my summer comfort is to wear the Columbia or Magellan vented shirts. The ones that are made from pure nylon, not cotton or cotton blends. The nylon doesn't hold the moisture well and drys quickly. I supply the moisture. I also wear a Guatemalan Palm hat with a 6" brim.

Right now I wish I had your problem. Here in Northern Minnesota I have 4" of fresh snow and still snowing.

AW geez 45 - I was just in Reno....landed in a snowstorm, spent 3 days in snow and then 70.........(used to live there but still.........:D)

there is a product somewhere that acts lie the one I was talking about - looks likes a bandana, swells up like a balloon and keeps ya cool for hours

I had something like that. I think they were some gimmie-swag at the SHOT Show one year. There was a powder in them that turned to a saturated gel when soaked, and the evaporation was supposed to keep your cool for some while. Sort of a personal swamp cooler around your neck. Don't remember the brand name and they didn't work all that well.

There's always the old-school (from the pre-helmet days) bicycle racers trick: soak a cabbage in ice water overnight. The next day, remove a wet leaf from the cabbage and put it inside your hat. It will keep you cooler a lot longer than just wetting your hat.

Its starting to get really warm here in the Southern Californian Desert too. Luckly its not really humid, just hot. the only solution is to go early in the morning. Its started getting miserable around 9AM or so...

Yup, I'm livin' just south of sarasota, today sucked. After the coldest, wetest winter in a long long time, we are gonna have a nasty hot summer.

I broke out my old boonie hat (dunked in the cooler when it get's dry) and been "goin' commando" in my all cotton bib's and "wife beater" knit nylon shirts. I stay well hydrated and move pretty slow, but steady, thru the heat of the day. For the duration, any serious work (welding, fab and wrench turnin') is gonna get done prior to 0900 or after 2200. 2- 48 inch fans in the shop keep it almost liveable.

My "day job" runs from 1700 to 2300 in an A/C'd big box store, but the cheap SOB's turn the air off at 1800... Green tea and cool thoughts is gonna get me thru. (Never thought I'd miss the monsoon season in SE Asia) Paul

Ok, now I'm laughing .... frozen cabbage leaves ... man of man.... / a "swamp around your neck".....:)

You're right OneOunce - we're just weather pussies up here in the Northwest!

I'm on the way to our wine country for the weekend ...and I'll have heat stroke if it gets over 70 degrees and bitching all day ...( but you can't get by on $ 30 K / You'll need at least $ 75K for the ATV, the truck, trailer, etc.....you can't drag a new Kubota around in some old beater truck ...).

We have had 45 deg C so far. Or about 115 deg F with humidity and may is just starting. Only gets hotter. Way hotter. I seem to remember the "Cool-Danna" product worked great for me. When I started sweating, it cooled me down a tollerable amount when working in the hangar or in the shade.

On our flight line when its 54deg C or hotter with 100% humidity, not much helps though truth be told.
