Looking for suggestions on what aftermarket choke tube to use for 00 Buck

Which aftermaket choke tubes yield the best result for 00 buck?

I've been looking at choke tubes made by Carlson, Wad Wizard, and pattern masters, but I can't seem to find a review regarding their performance with 00 buck.

In your experience, what has worked well for you?

Also, does the dead coyote made by Carlson work well with 00 buck? Or does it only work well with the hevi-shot?

As always, thanks in advance everyone :).

More depends on the load you choose than the choke, in most cases. Something like Federal Premium with the FliteControl wad should give very tight patterns with a CYL or ImpCyl choke.

Do some buckshot shopping before you spend big bux on an aftermarket choke tube...

also important is what range, and what use are you looking for?

ive used the dead coyote choke in my mossy 500 22" bbl, with federal 4 buck, at 25yd i had 15" groups.

it was the only ammo that would do that, every other kind of shot would spread wildly past 10yd.

There are several variables, barrel length, load, obviously choke.

The best thing I can tell you is to set up a pattern board and go from there.

I am currently using 2 3/4" maximum Federal LE132-00 with flitecontrol wad.

Most of them land on a silhouette's upper body at about...30 yards?

The pattern is rather random though.

If I remember correctly, this was with a modified choke and an improved cylinder choke.

For some reason, the two chokes gave me nearly identical performance.

I don't really have a specific use in mind right now except maybe deer; but I just want a real tight pattern :D.

Anyway, since the load is as important as the choke, what other loads do you guys recommend?

I've seen the results of a pattern master on a 11-87. the father in law kills alot at some long distances with it. 60-70yds I'm in no way an advicate of this, but it seems to work for him.

Choke. schmoke, buck or bird...All a choke does is keep the shot together for a longer period of time (distance)...

What do you wish to kill with this 00 buck? At what range do you wish to kill it at? Those are the question that you should be asking yourself and them tailor the choke and load to your needs...

If you're talking HD distances 5 to 10 yards then nothing you put on the end of the barrel is going to make that much of a difference as the shot is just starting to really spread at 5 yds and at that distance you're looking at maybe 10" in spread...If you're talking much farthur then that, then it isn't HD any more and forget castle doctrine...

The most all purpose choke is M/Mod/Modified which will give you a 60% coverage in a 30" circle at 40 yds...

Does it make a difference what type/size shots you use? Or is the chart only referring to the "standard" 2 3/4" birdshots with 7 1/2 pellets?

Hank15 -- Does it make a difference what type/size shots you use? Or is the chart only referring to the "standard" 2 3/4" birdshots with 7 1/2 pellets?

Yes, no, maybe, kinda/sorta and I guess sometimes...

Effective and Ideal was both expressed in x to y range to cover the difference between LEAD small buck and small bird...Heavy buck, #4 and over will spread out a wee bit more but remember that there are far less pellets to cover the same area of space in the circle...

A choke’s designation is classified by how many pellets (as a percentage of the total in the cartridge) will fall in a 30" (76cm) circle at 40 yards (36m).

Steel shot is usually a bit wider spread, about one choke up to achieve the same pattern...Bismuth and Heli pattern about the same maybe a even little tighter...

Shot spreaders or diffusion chokes work opposite of normal chokes--they are designed to spread the shot more than a cylinder bore, generating wider patterns for very short range use.

A number of recent spreader chokes, such as the Briley "Diffusion" line, actually use rifling in the choke to spin the shot slightly, creating a wider spread...one thing to note that when buck is fired from a rifled barrel it makes a doughnut shape on the patterning board...

Consider 5 or 7 yds, the normal training distances, depending on choke it would be like tossing from an apple to a cantaloupe sized load down the hallway, that's what your hitting with, no massive, side of wall to side of wall coverage, an apple to a cantaloupe...

Where chocking plays a big difference is with birds (clay or real) because to tight of a choke can easily miss them where with too wide a choke they fly through the pattern...If I flush a bird with a full choked gun I'll wait until they're 25, 30 yards away before shooting because if they're too close you can really damage a lot of meat as well as missing as the tight spread hasn't opened up enough...If I'm using an Improved Cylinder choke then I'll take them as soon as I can mount my gun because they'll very soon be out of range, the spread will be far too wide and only a lucky hit to the head would kill them...

I forgot to add this:
Remember that the spread is a circle and the area of a circle is pi R²
and the circumference is 2 pi R…

pi = 3.14159265358979323846

circle…circum.....area
05…...15.70…..….19.64
10…...31.42…..….78.54
15…...47.12…....176.72
20…...62.83…..…314.16
30…...94.25…..…706.86
40…..125.66…..1256.64

So you got to make 9 000 buck shot fill up that amount of space. that's 139.82 in² or looking at it another way there is twenty inches of space top and bottom, right and left of the target and most people are considered to be approximately ten inches wide when standing sideways...
