I am planning to purchase my first handgun for personal protection. I live in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. Once purchased, I would like to be able to take it to the local firing range. I do not plan on carrying it around with me except to and from firing range.

What steps do I need to take in order to be able to buy a handgun & drive to the firing range with it in my car?

You need to go to the police station, and get a gun/handgun buyer's permit, I'm sure.

As far as traveling with your gun legally, empty gun in a guncase in trunk, I'm sure. Truck's? I don't know. Ask the police when you get there, they should give you the info you need.

As far as ammo, I think as long as it's not with the gun, your okay.
