Looking for some advice on a new gun.

I came into some money recently and I was hoping to acquire a semi-auto rifle of the 5.56/.223 variety. I'm not particular to pattern of rifle and I already own a .22 and a Mauser. I wouldn't say no to something in .308 or 7.62x39 but 5.56/.223 is a bonus. Also, I'd like to stay under $500 if I can, with a max of $600. If it makes any difference I'm going to be looking the the Jamil Temple gun show in SC next weekend. Thanks for any help.

Your intended uses would help a lot in this case...

Pretty much the only semi-auto, in any of the calibers you listed, that can be found for a max of $600 is going to be a AK patterned rifle like a Saiga for example...

Edit: Oh, and welcome to TFL.

For that kind of money you could get a new WASR-3, Kel-Tec SU-16, Century Arms C-93, and maybe a used mini-14.

Kind of forgot to mention that I plan most to do target shooting, seeing as there are a million and one open fields around here in SC.

pretty much what everyone else has said.

ex-police mini-14's can be had for about $500. the kel tec su-16 is cool, but it and older mini's have accuracy issues (5-6 moa, which translates into a 5-6 inch group at 100 yards- 1 Minute Of Angle is equal to 1.04 inches at 100 yards).

my recommendation is a new saiga in .223- the ak platform is reliable, and saiga's are capable of 3 moa and better. Best of all, one can be had for $300, although i would recommend spending $100 on a mount and a red dot or similar optic, because ak style sights are AWFUL.

if your heart isn't set on .223, i would recommend the same gun in 7.62x39.

oh, one more thing, .223 and 5.56 aren't always interchangeable. I'm not sure exactly what the rule is, but i think its that .223 can be shot in 5.56 guns, but 5.56 can not be safely fired in guns chambered for .223.

The newer mini's are great guns. I dont see why it wouldnt shoot 2-3 moa or better right out of the box. If I was gonna get an AK it wouldnt be a saiga. Real AK's can be had for what you are looking to spend.
