I'm getting ready to buy my first heavy barrel varmint rifle. I'm going with .308.

I've narrowed it down to a few different rifles. Can you guys give me your opinons on these rifles. Thanks

1. CZ 550 Varmint w/ Laminate stock Price: $650

2. Tika T3 Varmint Stainless Price: $700

3. Savage 10FP-LE2A Price: $580

I've heard all kinds of great things about the CZ 550's, and the single set awesome. I don't know much about the others. Can you guys give me some info. Are there any other rifles under $700 that I should look at?

Thanks

Remington M700 VLS.

I also would recommend a different cartridge. .308Win is way too much recoil than necessary for varmints. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know why .308Win would even be considered for a varmint gun.

In my opnion, the Tikka has a better trigger unless you are shooting the CZ in the "set mode" and then the CZ has a fine trigger but when the CZ's trigger is not in the set mode then it has a lot of creep and kind of gritty feel to it. The Tikka's are just smooth as glass with no creep, a real joy of a trigger to shoot. It takes only a couple of minutes to adjust the Tikka's trigger down to my preferred 2 pound pull too which is a nice bonus. The CZ trigger is easy adjustable too and takes a little playing with to get it just right for you. Accuracy is just about even across the board between my CZ's and Tikka. I am a die hard CZ guy but I love my Tikka's too. I have only owned one Savage and hated so I sold it - I do not care at all for the accu-trigger.
I would say buy either the CZ or the Tikka and you will be very happy. Are you sure about the .308? I'm a big varmint hunter too and I prefer the .223 or the 22-250.

I have rifles with all three actions I guess I'd go with Tikka as my first choice. The Savage is not beautiful but it'll shoot right along with either the CZ or the Tikka.........Essex

Are you punching paper, flesh or both? If you are hunting, what type of game? At what ranges?

The set trigger would be great for paper, but not very useful in the field under most circumstances (there are some exceptions in my opinion).

Go buy a stevens. Then get a barrel from shaw in .308, SSS recoil lug and trigger, true the action and lap the bolt lugs (or just lap the bolt lugs, I think this is more important and can be done yourself with lapping compound), bed the action and you can have a 1/2 moa rifle for under 700.

BTW, I think it depends on the varmint. Prarie dogs and such matters probably would be better with something smaller, but if its for coyotes then .308 will be just fine. Especially if he wants to deer hunt with the same rifle. I varmint with a .270 win, though its just for coyotes.

Old thread I know - but considering same. The idea of building a Stevens from ground up is good but tell me- why would you true the action and lap the bolts on somethnig with a floating bolt????? Am I missing something here?

I just got a CZ 527, baby-brother to the 550, in .223. Put a Weaver K4 on it and it is a great little varmint gun.

I agree with UNSairman, to an extent...

The set trigger is great, and I think works well when you set up a coyote ambush. Not so hot on a stalk.

The trigger without the set is very creepy - needs to be stoned out or it will drive you nutz.

No, but Savage does have a new rifle in that chambering, the "12 F Class Precision Rifle" - read about it here:

http://www.savagearms.com/2007_pressrelease.htm

scroll down a ways... I will be getting that Savage.

Savage has been offering the Model 110 Predator Hunter in 6.5-.284 for a year or two now.

Savage offers a number of rifles under 700 from the factory that will get you sub-MOA out of the box. There's no need to buy a Stevens action and then a bunch of stuff to have a rifle built for you when you can just buy it straight from the factory like that.

Any of the specialty Savages are going to be shooters. I like the Precision Carbine in .308 with the 20" barrell it makes a handly little platform.

Tikka's are great rifles and close clones of the Sako 75. The CZ is also a nice shooting gun. I don't doubt a man could find a great combination in any of them.

Wow, we're calling 308's Varmint rifles now? You must have some serious woodchucks/ coyote's in your neck of the woods.

The CZ would treat you well but if it were me, which it's not, I would go with the 22-250 chambering. .308 is heavy for varmints in my opinion. I think the reason the CZ 550 only comes in .308 and 22-250 is because both cartridges use the same length action and same size bolthead. Ease of manufacturing maybe. Just my $0.02 worth.
