Looking for New HP Rifle

I've been considering a high power rifle, I don't currently have one (I do have a couple 22s and an SKS).

Mostly range use
Possible hunting, most likely medium to large game of the NW or Alaska? (just a thought)...

I'd also like it to be a good, long range sniper rifle, just because!

I almost went with a Savage 7mm mag or 30-06 ($350 combo) and lately I've been considering a 308/NATO because ammo is supposed to be more available and inexpensive - affordable is key, but I still want a decent arm that I could depend on if needed.

Depending on what large game in AK, both of those calibers may be a bit light....

The 308 is definately light for moose and brownies, but is alright for Elk if you can get in somewhat closer. It's gonna be the right answer for afordablity.

Affordable and accurate long-range sniper rifle don't go together very well. About the best you can do there is the 12 Series Savages, then you have to spend another $300 or more on glass and work up hand loads.

Never had the chance to hunt moose or elk but so far I have yet to come across somthing a. 22 cannot kill much less 223 or 308..but getting the most bang for you buck..savage is going to be the way to go...hard to beat for the price..I personally own a fn spr 20 inch barrel 308..and it shoots monstrous 168 grain bthp like a breeze...name one thing on this plannet that you cannot kill with that lol :)

moose are not near as tough as elk. I've shot several of both.

Having said that the 308 is plenty big enough for either animal. I prefer a 270Win but I just like that round.

I found the gun finder.

Most likely is a combo due to price and I could wait on a scope (Model: 16 FXP3), but a few others are also interesting, if there is a significant advantage.

Model: 16 FHSAK

Model: 12 FVSS, Model: 12 BVSS

Good to know. It's pretty unlikely to get charged by an Elk (short of stupidity). But it seemed like it'd be pretty easy to suprise a Moose in the alders and get stomped.

Good to know I don't need the 300 mag on moose hunts.

I killed this puppy with a 4" Model 28 using 150 LSWC 357s when it desided to attack my partrol car. Neck shot at the base of the head.

The 12 BVSS is a really nice precison rifle - it's way to heavy and long for most hunting.

You don't need the brake on a 308 unless you have weak bones or some other odd condition. 308 just doesn't kick that hard in a rifle heavier than about 6 pounds.
