High cap magazines, muzzle brake, recoil pad(little more length and a little more control),
buffer-tech recoil buffer (protects gun),
maybe a tatical light mount...as to where...get yourself a copy of "SHOTGUN NEWS" magazine, they have lots of ads for people carrying mini-14 accessories, or go to your next gun show.

I'll agree on hi-cap magazines. However, apart from a short flash suppressor (if nothing else, it protects the crown), I don't think much of a lot of those accessories for the Mini14.

Jacketed Barrel Sleeve - what for? You're not suppose to grab a hot gun by the barrel anyway.

Bipod. The gun is light and handy. Rest it on a natural object.

Folding stock. OK if length and storage is a problem, but be careful about the make as some are better than others.

Recoil Pad. Recoil is mild on a Mini. A pad is OK if you're a long armed shooter and need the addtional length of pull.

Scout Rail System - forget it on a Mini if the system is mounted via a clip on the barrel (too much pounding on the scope) or screwed into the stock (expansion & contraction and shifting POA/POI).

Scope Mounting systems - if it isn't a Ranch, don't scope it.

Duncan Long books - get a Brownell's catalog for the same info. ;)

I've never been on the wrong side of a firing line so I can't give you a firsthand report as to the effectiveness of one maker's muzzle brake over another. Be that as it may, as a victim of effective marketing/advertising, I'm partial towards the Smith Enterprises Vortex fash hider. However, I don't know whether Smith makes one for the Mini.

Another preference I have is for the pinned on style breaks/compensators as opposed to the ones held in place by four allen-head screws. A slight bit off and either the gas pressure or worse, the bullet will strike it and throw the break from your muzzle. Either way, once installed, it behooves the user to check it to ensure concentricity with the bore.

Cheaper then dirt has a muzzle brake I like because it slips over the stock site so if you don't like it it easily comes off. It lowered the point of impact on my 30 5".

Cabelas has some accessories www.cabelas.com, also try gunaccessories.com or gunhoo.
sorry, I dont know how to make working links
There is a Mini-14 discusion forum starting at Perfect Union BBS, Hope to see you there.

Stupid question time: For two or more modifications, don't you have to have a class 3 license? Please clue me in.

The only two accessories that I am going to add to my Mini 14 RR is to add a composite stock (less weight) and a new rear sight (prob a Williams from CTD). I've lived with this rifle for about two years and I know it well enough to want these two things. I wouldn't argue with a flash supressor if you see this as a primary self defense weapon, but it adds too much length for my tastes.

HOWEVER, if you haven't gone out and wasted a bunch of money on accessories for a gun yet, go for it. It is expected, and we will think the poorer of you if you haven't done it! Some day I'll show you my gun shelves. Filled with some of the most useless crap on the face of the earth, but it sure was fun buying it!!! :) Heck, I bought a used 10/22 that had a flash supressor installed (and I left it on). Boy, have I gotten ribbed for that gun... ;)

I am seriously thinking about changing to a folding stock. I honestly can't see it as being a problem (but I could be wrong). It would make it easier to handle indoors and in the car. Also, I wouldn't mind cutting down some weight on the already light package.

Any thoughts or comments on that?

I too recently bought a Mini. As to magazines...I'll give you my experiences.

The Ruger factory mags worked flawlessly. They locked up into the well solidly. I've a 5 round and a 20 round.

I have a few 30 round PrecisionMag Ind. units that again worked flawlessly. Locked in well as good as the factory mags. Got them from http://www.clipsNstuff.com for about $38.00 US. They still has them in stock.

Got a Triple K mag that again functioned flawlessly, but had to fiddle with it to get it to lock in properly. The finish isn't holding up. Also, it dented at the front hole, and the lug at the back is showing signs of serious wear after VERY limited use. It looks as if the rear lug when it was welded in place wasn't aligned too well.

Then I come to the USA mags. I've got 3 of them. IMHO they are crap. Next to impossible to get locked in place quickly. Was getting failures to feed. Both...rounds getting stuck on the way into the chamber-bolt open(bad), as well as the bolt riding over the top of the magazine giving you an empty chamber-bolt closed(even worse). Paid $13.00 US I'm gonna try to work on them and see what I can do. Maybe a stiction problem with the follower/spring.

Just for some information...my Mini is a 181 series which I got from a friend. Rifle had only 250 rounds through it when I purchased it.
This model has a floating pin that holds the mag at it's front. Newer models have a pin that does not float. This might possibly be why I experienced problems locking in some of the "cheaper" mags. Don't know, but then again don't care. I'll be ordering more PrecisionMag units. :)

I also own a mini....

I personally like the high cap mags for the simplicity they offer but if you do ANY prone at all you'll want to watch the length.

I also bought a Choate folding stock at one point... I'm going back to the wood. My opinion of folders is less than fantastic.. Its rugged enough, but my hold is all screwed up and it just does not feel right.

Frankly, most of them suck. I'd recommend a good synthetic stock with pistol grip and, possibly, a flash-hider with winged sight protector is also a good accessory. Choate makes these both and they're good quality. Try:

For plinking, you can also modify the gun so that it will fire two shots every time you pull and release the trigger! It's legal and something you can do with just a staple.

Beyond this, there really isn't anything else I would do to the gun.
