looking for input

Hello everyone
I'm new to forums! Excited to be here!
I'm looking to scope my FAL. I am a long time shooter and hunter. But I have always used iron sights.... the only rings I could find to fit my rail was utg quick throw mounts. Any thoughts on those. And ideas on a inexpensive scope to start off with....
Thanks'

Please do not confuse inexpensive with cheap. Nothing will make you madder than a hen in water than when your out hunting and the reticules in your scope give way, or the scope fogs up on the inside of the glass.

Some guys say it is better to have a $100.00 gun and a $200.00 scope. Look around at some of the yard sales and Craigs list to see if you can find a quality used one. (Know a Wal-mart employee? They get a 10% discount on stuff they buy. ;))

I bought a $70.00 scope and put it on my rifle and the biggest buck I had seen in years was able to walk away because I could not acquire him in the scope.

Welcome to TFL.

I do know the diff between inexpensive and cheap. The reason I'm saying inexpensive is cause I have heard there are good scopes for under 300 bucks. I will stay way from cheap quality as I always do!
Thank you for the info

I don't know what kind of rail you have but most rail type dust covers for FALs are "Picatinny" type. Based on that you should be able to use any ring designed for a "Picatinny rail". This leaves me a bit confused on why the choices are limited as that is one of the most used systems ever.

As for a "bargain" scope don't do it, particularly on a FAL as they are hard on optics & anything other than something rugged is going to fail sooner or later & cost you to replace it.

If you want a good sub $300.00 scope for a FAL look out for a "SUIT" or "Trilux SUIT" same scope different names. You should find one with its dust cover (which you will need it is not Picatinny) for about $250~$300 and it will absolutely hold up to the pounding a FAL hands out.

Thanks for the info.. for some unknown reason the rail is slightly smalll the a pic rail. It had me stumped. So I took it to a gun show. Went through a dozen or so mounts befor I found one that would tighten down. I was thinking of trying nikon prostaff. I have heard they will take a beating. What do you think?

It slides on then has attaching screws tha mount it to an enternal rail on the inside. I was told by a local guy that some old austrian rails that came in were an odd ball sizes and didn't. Have any luck here in the USA so the importer stoped shiping them in. Looks like I may order a rail from DSA.
Growing up we didn't have money for optics so this is all new to me!
Dad taught me to shoot well with iron and keep my shots under 150 yards. I lived in south eastern ohio so shots over 200 yard were vary rare

Nikon Prostaff are good scopes, check out Burris as well they make a really nice 2~8 that works well with the FAL & is much more compact than the more usual 3~9.
