Looking for info on Taurus .45 ACP

Saw a Taurus .45 ACP "Tracker" today (I think that was the name) and am interested in any info or experience with this item.

My first gun (many years ago) was a Taurus and I swore I would never buy one again as it was a piece of crap. Finding revolvers in .45 ACP seems to be tough and I happened to see the "Tracker" today.

Well, when getting a feel for the item, guess what. The cylinder locked up and the release would not work. Even after 5 minutes of toying with the item, the dealer could not fix it.

Is this item any good or do I have a curse that all Taurus items I touch break???

Taurus wheelgun problems..

I have heard WAY too many complaints about glitchy actions on Taurus revolvers to but a new one, and my brother had two M44s go south on him- one right after the other.

A .45 ACP revolver is a great gun, but if I buy one it'll be a S&W Mountain Gun. You can have THAT baddie re-cut to .460 w/o problems, and have the best of both worlds- .45 ACP for day to day use, and .44 power when the fat little deer come stumbling along like sacrificial lambs...

Taurus

I have a Taurus mod. 85 .38 revolver, and its Braztech Corporate cousin, a Rossi mod. 352, also in .38spl. I've put a couple hundred rounds through each to see that they worked properly; they worked properly.
I think (based on what I'm reading on TFL), sticking with all steel is the key.
Both of mine are steel and perform
nicely.

Steel vs. Titanium

Mike & kbsm, ya'll are probably right about the stainless thing. Most of the bad reports I have read have been regarding the TI guns- but both those M44s referred to above were stainless.

I hope the gun works out, I've said for years that the one sensible snub Taurus' should have made was a .45 ACP snub. I just wish they would now make their own version of the "Mountain Gun" on the M44 frame; make it in .460, with a 4-5" slender barrel, and fixed sights regulated for 230's at 25 yards- with NO PORTING. They could even steal a little more thunder from S&W by making the front sight easily replaceable, as on the late 29 Classics, and available in various heights and colors.

I got no beef with Taurus (beef with the bull; get it?) except for those two lemons my brother got saddled with. I'll buy a gun from anybody -even Smith & Wesson- on two conditions:

1. It's exactly what I want, as in the Mountain Gun,

2. I can't get the same or better gun from somebody else, and

3. they get it right on the first try.

Nothing I hate more than to go through the crap & paperwork to buy a handgun, only to find that it needs to go back to the factory or the auction block.

Take care-

One fact I did not mention is that I want this for home protection and from what I am gathering, it is the luck of the draw that the Taurus will function properly everytime.

Probably not the best to use when ones life may depend on it.

The one item that caught my eye were the ports to hlep managability. I have not seen this on any other .45 ACP revolvers.

My wife and I have fired about 2000 rounds through her stainless .357 tracker, and it works great. The action is awesome, comparable to a nicely broken in S&W (yes, I did side by side and had some S&W only folks try it out).

The only complaint I have is of slighly weak hammer strike. It has problems with CCI primers and vary rare problems with Winchester. Needless to say, as soon as I switched to federal we've had no problems.

That is because ports are pretty much senseless on a .45 ACP. That is one of the most pleasant calibers to shoot that I own. I prefer it to the .40 or .357 Sig for shooter comfort. I also prefer it to small .38s and 9mms. I vastly prefer it to any magnum. As a matter of fact, just about the only caliber that I think is more pleasant to shoot than the .45 is the .22 LR. Why on earth would you want to clutter up a .45 ACP with ports?

I have a Performance Center 625 with a removable compensator, and the couple of times I tried it, I really did not notice a difference.
