The best book I've found thus far on French rifles is "Proud Promise" which is published by Collectors Grade Publication in Canada. It's a book which will open your eyes with regards to firearms development. Apparently the French were trying to develop a semi-automatic rifle prior to WWI and experimented with all types of gas actions. The book covers those early attempts all the way up to the Mas 49/53.
