Looking for combat pistol, need advice.

OK, maybe this weekend I have had to much spare time. I will buy another pisotl soon so I am trying to decide what I want.

I was trying to think what the ultimate combat pistol would be.

I want it to be fairly light in weight but not a compact. I can't CCW anyway. I want it to be DAO. High Capacity is preffered. I want to be able to switch out .40 and .357 Sig barrel's.

So far I am thinking about a H&K USP, Glock 22\31 or the Sig P226

Any suggestions?

I have been very satisfied with my Glock 22. I personally use it both as a defensive handgun, and in competition in IDPA and IPSC. I think it is the perfect balance in size, weight, power and ease of use.

I think the Glock 23 is the best in the .40 series from Glock. Have you thought about the 10mm? They have barrel change-outs for .357, and .40, yet have the power of the 10mm available. I own a Glock 20 and love it, and have owned the 29. Loved that one too.

I've been a long time compact SIG fan (228/229), but I recently got a P226 9mm and a Beretta 96 Brigadier (.40 Auto). I took them out for an extended spin this afternoon. I am really impressed by both. I prefer the controls of the SIG, which also has a fair bit fewer small parts. It would be a toss-up, though, to decide based on personal judgment about fit and feel. They are both very accurate and by all accounts extremely reliable. I think the P226 may edge out the P228 as the main carry pistol.

I think the G19 is the best UNIVERSAL combat handgun. Since we're talking USA, the G23 seems to be what you're describing. Light, low bore axis for fast follow ups, consistent trigger, highcap.

1911Ford,

I own two of the semiautomatics advocated in earlier posts: The Sig P-226 (with the stainless slide) and the Glock 23C. Both are truly excellent firearms; I have had no failures or maintenance problems with either pistol.

This said, I absolutely prefer the P-226. I have no desire to initiate a "flame war" with TFL's large Glock group, but the P-226 is appreciable more accurate (for me) and its design, manufacturing quality, and reliability are superb. I bought the P-226 in .357 Sig and then invested about $200 in a .40 S&W Bar-Sto barrel, which may be even more accurate than the Sig factory barrel. The P-226 fires either load with excellent accuracy and with zero problems. All that is required to change calibers is to switch the barrel (the Sig magazines are used by both rounds).

Off topic but 1911Ford, drop me an E-mail when you get a chance. Based on your profile it sounds as though you are in the KC area. Terri and I are doing the gun show up there this coming weekend.

If you're shopping Glock, SIG or H&K it seems price is not a big issue. All three are quality brands, so the only thing I suggest is trying them out. Some ranges rent one or more brands, or you can find a buddy with one who'll let you loose off some rounds at the range.

I think you're more likely to find hicap mags for the Glock, but brace yourself for the pricing.

For the ultimate "size be dammed" combat gun, I'd have to go with the Glock 20. I'm a firepower freak (the more rounds of a more powerful bullet, the better). There are not many guns I can think of which give you more firepower than 15+1 rounds of 10mm.

Another option is the new Para-Ord P14LDA (since you specify DA). I haven't shot it, but I love my P13.45. 14+1 rounds of .45 ain't bad at all.

Based on the original post, 1911Ford is looking for a Double Action Only(DAO) gun. I know that USPs can be converted to DAO but I didn't know that Sigs could. Is this right that they can be converted from DA/SA to DAO?Glocks I wouldn't characterize as Double Action at all. Safe-Action might be it's name but it's closer to a SA with a long, light takeup and a release with significant creep. The smoothest true DAO semi-autos I've checked out were Berettas.

OK my definition of a DAO is the trigger both cocks and releses the hammer. Just like a DA/SA, but the pistol can't be cocked manually. Cruddy definition but without a bunch of rambling that is about the best short definition I can come up with.

I would recomend either a Glock or Sig. Both are excellent combat guns. If you need a DAO the get the Glock. Just keep in mind that the Glock doesn't offer that long pull normally associated with the pulling back of the hammer. The Glock, once the slack has been taken up, releases fairly quickly.

Ya, I wouldnt own a DA pistol. Let me rephrase that. A DA pistol is the last gun I would own. Pistol not revolver. SA or DAO first choice in a pistol.

Just as long as it's not a 1911 or a BHP, any pistol from one of the larger manufacturers will do fine. Glock, Sig, Walther, Magnum Research, H&K, et cetera.

Hmm, a local shop has two SS beretta 96D's used for $426 each. I personally can't stand DAO, though.

Consider a Glock 35 .40 You can buy a .357 barrell for it at a later time, and it is an excellent weapon with a longer sight radius. It is one of the best shooting weapons I have ever shot. I prefer it over the Sig's, Berettas, and 1911 I have owned.
