Looking for an assault rifle.......

OK hold on to your seats but my wife asked me is there any particular gun you want? (it's another story why) Well there is as a matter of fact. The only thing is I don't know what it is. Let me describe it and see if any of yall out there can name it. First it MUST be .308. It must have capability of holding 30 rounds. It can be of m16 style. I guess a bushmaster would fit the bill perfectly but do they make it in 308? I found an armalite in 308 which would be perfect. I was not to thrilled with the price. The l1a1 is being considered but the spare parts are of concerned. OK with all that in mind is my next rifle out there somewhere?

You've really got two choices....

....if you want an M16 type .308. The Armalite AR10 and the Stoner SR-25. I don't believe 30 round magazines exist for either one of them.

There are an abundance of FAL parts out there and I think some inch pattern 30 round magazines exist.

If you are thinking of a .308/7.62 rifle that looks similar in size (magazine-wise) to the AR, the 20 round mags for .308 rifles are about the same height size of the AR 30 rounders. The 30 round mags for .308 are quite a bit longer than the .223/5.56 mags. IIRC, the 30 round FAL mags are modified Bren mags. It looks a bit odd in an FAL but some people don't mind.

There are also higher capacity magazines for the HK(-type) rifles. I'm not sure if any are genuine HK but quite a few are aftermarket with 1½ or 2 - 20 round mags welded together. I've never tried any but from what I gather, these do not work very well.

The standard magazine for the .308/7.62 Galil is a 25 round mag. The size is not as noticable on the Galil as the 30 round mag is in the FAL.

Considering surplus 7.62 ammo is generally packaged in 20 round boxes, the 20 round mags seem to be just right. Plus, CETME, HK, and FAL (of various licenced manufacture) mags are going for Crazy Eddie prices.

It doesn't have to be 30 rnd mags. 15 20 25 any will do. I was just wanting to eliminate the low capacity rifles. I gave it the assault weapon name because I just don't have anything in my inventory that fits the category.

I'd lean toward the FAL. Great gun and mags can often be found for 6-8 bucks apiece. Thirty round mags turn me off.....suck for prone shooting and have never been disappointed with 20 rounders in the field playin deadly games.

If you did not like the price of the AR10 you really won't like the price of an:

Hk
Galil
Knight
new M1A1

Cheapest best .308 semi auto rifle (I would prefer if we all got away from the "assualt rifle" nomenclature) is most likely a DSA / Enterprise / ARS / Other high quality builder FAL. The cost is going to be about $800.00 and up.

Mags are cheap. Parts are cheap and plentiful.

The other option - CMP weapon - about $500.00 - a great way to get into High Power as well.

Good luck

Here is a Galil AR .308, they seem to be sweet guns but the price isn't to sweet.

A FAL would be the way to go. If you don't want to build, then go for the DSA STG58A and let the addiction start there. It's hard to own just one FAL.

License built US made FALs and HKs can be found at shows as cheap as $600. Excellent deal.

I don't like the FAL triggers...obnoxiously heavy. I don't like the balance. IT IS a very good product, however. That's just my taste.

The Chinese M1As have a bad rep, but it's probably undeserved. Rumor has it that Springfield started them to limit competition (bad receivers, et al. The people I know who own them have no problems).

Hard to go wrong with an H&K. The Germans have always been good at machines that kill.:p

Eagle Arms is producing Ar-10s under license, and I've seen them below $1000. Looked to be good work.

Just how much trouble do you want to go through?

American Spirit Arms - one of those AR-15 kit companies - has recently been selling kits for AR-10 rifles (.308).
They offer a lower that will accept FAL magazines (why doesn't Armalite do that?).

http://www.gunkits.com

DS Arms sells a 30 round L1A1 magazine that can be converted to metric.

http://www.dsarms.com/magazines.htm

So you can have an AR-15 type rifle that will take a 30 round .308 magazine if you really want one.

Personally, I'd just get a metric FAL.

How about a Cetme?

Well, there are some 30 round mags for the HK-91/CETME and for the FN-FAL.

Mind you, setting aside the lack of selective fire, I wouldn't call either of the two "assault" rifle since the 7.62 mm Nato is really a full power cartridge. The true assault rifle is suppose to shoot an intermediary sized cartridge.

If budget is a big issue, keep in mind that a brand new .308 Vepr can be had for $500-$600.

edit: Here's a pic...you can get them with polymer stocks and pistol grips as well.

4V50 Gary -- the 7.62x51 NATO _is_ an "intermediate" cartridge to those of us who prefer the .30-06. ;)

rr41mag -- once you get your rifle, check out southernammo.com for outstanding prices on milsurp 7.62 NATO...

Semper fi,
Bruegger out.

The only problem about the .308 VEPRs, and what's holding me back from getting a Super, is the availability of high-cap mags. Modifications can be made to accept M14 mags but the operation is an additional cost and the mags are much more than the FAL and HK(-type) ones.

I'd suggest a CETME, but I have a severe problem recommending anything stamped with "Century Arms." Seen WAY too much shoddy crud come out under their moniker. Same with Hesse.

One question, though. Saw a bunch of Federal Arms HK91s (they had a weaver rail on the top of the receiver) at a gun show, and they piqued my interest. However, when I looked at the ejection port, it looked like part of the receiver was welded or something? Kinda disconcerting, so I didn't bite.

Essential Arms preban lower, Bushmaster upper with 16" chrome lined chamber and bore. Compact, accurate, light, and deadly.
cost; around $1000.00

Romanian SAR 1 in 7.62 x 39. AMD-65 fore end with foreward pistol grip, Ace stock. 30 round mags are dirt cheap and ammo is plentiful (for now)
cost; under $300.00 basic/$500.00 with up grades

hay neither are .308 but neither cost over $1000.00 and both are cheap to shoot. food for thought.
:D

Riddleofsteel

Nice pics, especially the bottom one. Looks like a picnic, but with steel and lead instead of peanut butter and jelly. :)
You probably need a few more mags for the SAR. ;)

What kind of bags are those BTW? The gun bags that is.
