Looking for an accurate AR

Hello All!

The goal for my next gun is to pick up something that I can shoot paper targets with at 100 and 300 yards that is accurate and the ammunition is reasonably priced. I already have two bolt actions (.22 and K-31 Swiss), so I also thought it would be a good time to pick up a semi-automatic. This has lead me to look at the AR platform in .223 (though I could be convinced of something else). I also would like to be able to shoot in different positions (not all bench rest) which means the super-heavy bull barrel doesn't seem like a good idea because it makes the gun unbalanced.

The ones I have my eye on are the Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit and the RRA Coyote (putting my budget around $1,200 before I add the scope).

Where I'm looking for some advice is:
  • Which gun is a better pick (PP or Coyote)?
  • What length do you recommend for balance & accuracy (16" or 20")?
  • Is there a better manufacturer or gun choice for my budget?
Thank you in advance for your help!

How accurate are you going for?

Are you going for 1 MOA or trying to shoot your groups in one ragged hole?

The reason I ask is most ARs nowadays will shoot 1 MOA, but if you are looking for 1 hole accuracy, you will have to spend more than $1200.

The two rifles you are looking at will definitely shoot 1 MOA. As far as 16 or 20 inch barrel, it will not matter inside 300 yards. But if you want to go longer, maybe 600 yards or more, I'd pick the 20". I don't think you'd go wrong with either one.

My opinion is there are many ARs out there, some are made to be combat ready, some are for hunting and some are made for the range. Look around more and visit your LGS and get a feel for as many you can find. That's half the fun.

As a side note, you will get other advice that will tell you that only this brand or that brand will work. Remember it's their opinion.

Good luck with your future rifle!

@RT, both the Larue upper and the RRA Predator/Coyote rifles claim a 3/4 MOA accuracy. Never shot either one but 3/4 is pretty darn good in my book. :)

I'm just looking for rifle that is capable of sub 1" groups at 100 (3/4 MOA seems just about right) if I do my part.

I own a RRA ATH. It will shoot 3/4" groups all day long at 100 yards if you feed it quality ammo (mine likes black hills 68gr MHP's). My ATH and the Predator Pursuit share the same wilson barrels. If I had to pick between your two choices the Predator would get the nod. As far as 16"vs 20", 16 will be as accurate as a 20" barrel at 100 yards. I split the difference with my 18" ATH:cool:

One other suggestion would be to check out http://pkfirearms.com/Rock_River_Arms_Barreled_Uppers/57/c and buy complete upper from them for $599 and your complete NM lower here for $299 http://www.class3weapons.com/AR0940X_Rock_River_Arms_Complete_Lower_Receiver_p/ar0940x.htm then just pin them together. By doing that, you save ~$250 vs buying the complete rifle direct from RRA.

Another pleased RRA ATH owner. .5 MOA with good handloads, and the adjustable stock is very handy for adjusting lop to proper eye relief for scope.

It is heavy, but not as heavy as the 20 in bull barreled versions.

If you were to search for Accurate AR in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of a White Oak, upper.

Probably the top of the line amoung HP shooters, up to 1000 yards.

However you mentioned you want something to shoot 300. If thats the case then any major brand will work.

So many choices

Keep in mind that I have only shot three different makes, on a regular basis and all three are set up differently. Won't mention the two as I don't want folks to think i'm bashing them. The one that "I" got the best performance out of, was the Rock River Arms and I thought it was called a Varmiter. ...

Be Safe !!!

I suggest building your own. I can email you a couple builds I've put together if you'd like. cost anywhere between 1-1.2k

also your best bet might be to get the larue predatAR in 5.56. amazing accuracy and of course amazing larue quality.
