Looking for advice on optics

I need some advice. I would like to put some optics on a model 41. I do not compete but I am a serious target shooter non the less. I will also use this gun on squirrels. (I realize some do not think the 41 should be used for hunting)

What is the difference between a Holographic sight and a red dot sight?
What are the pros and cons of the sizes of the dots? Which would work for my uses?

Can you steer me in the right direction so I do not buy something that won't work?

Keith,
I have two 5.5" barrels for my S&W M41. One wears factory iron sights. The other wears a Leupold 2X EER scope in Leupold mount and rings, properly sighted in. I can switch barrels in a few seconds without having to resight the barrel. Makes a very nice combo.

a 2moa red dot will be the size of the hole a 22lr makes at 37.5 feet. a 4 moa would be 2 inches at 150 feet. thats about the size of the tree rats head. reasonable size/distance and price. Holographic is for klingons only.

+1 on 2 or 3x scope. My 41 has a 2x and my CZ .22 top has a 3x and I would never go back to a dot. Those are low enough magnification to shoot both eyes open

A good 2x fixed pistol scope will always be my first choice in a handgun optic. Perfect for both the 25yd indoor range and bouncing bunnies at 75yds. Also perfect for big bore sixguns used for deer hunting. Honestly, I've used them and really can't find a purpose for a red dot where a 2x wouldn't be better.
