Looking for a rifle for my husband

Hi there,

I'm looking for a gun for my husband and I'm not too familiar with them. It will be for target shooting (he already has several hunting rifles). Some things I'm looking for:

.22
Bolt
< $500 (Canadian)

I guess the guys at the club shoot with peep sights but I was doing research and went to a couple guns stores this morning (the only ones within a 50km radius of us) and the closest gun within my budget was the Savage MK II FVT. Is this a pretty decent gun?

The other one was a Savage MK II BTV (with the thumbhole) but there were no sights. I was hoping we didn't have to scope another gun...it would be kind of nice to have a gun with peep sights for this particular target. It's one of those competitive targets..indoor range 20 yards. He's not actually looking to shoot competitively but he is still using the same targets. Anyway..what are my options??

well first on the scope deal. tell him to get a picatinny rail installed and then just use whatever scope he has on his new gun. I use my Night Force on 6 different rifles, I also have one hunting scope that I use on 3 other hunting rifles.. that way I have 2 really nice glass pieces and don't have to waste money on a scope for each gun. that's old school, get a good torque wrench and I have had 0 issues returning to zero. just write down adjustments between each gun.

look at a Tikka T3, as well as a Browning breakdown .22, love mine. it has iron sights

In the .22 department, CZ makes some excellent bolt guns with iron sights, and the CZ dove-tail should you decide to scope-up at a later date.

Some are more the hunting style, others more the target style.
The more target orientated seem to only take scopes, though.

You can see some examples here.

Both your Savage choices are a great set up. The CZ is also a great rifle. As for the Remmy's, Umm cough, cough, NOT. Did I just say that :D.

Agree with Pond. CZ has some great bolt action Rimfire rifles in .22 LR, .17HMR, and 22 WMR. They have smooth actions and are very accurate. CZ would be an excellent choice..

Okay, I looked into the CZ's and they are in the $600's price range here but I'm going to take a look at some used gun shops too. Thank you for your suggestions!

You might look at the Savage Mark II FVT -- it's not as sexy-looking as the BTV, but it comes with very decent peep sights. I think it lists for a bit over $400 US, so the street price is probably somewhat less.

I like CZ .22s a bit better than the Savage line, but it's mostly personal preference -- the Savages are a lot of rifle for the money.

10/22, you can buy that as a base or with a few options. As your husband shoots more, he can change parts, stocks, bolts, barrels, sights etc as he wants. 1000's of options and aftermarket products out there available for that gun.

Since when is the 10/22 a Bolt rifle?

When I run Remington Thunderbolt through it. :P

In answer to the original question. CZ bolt action .22s are really fine rifles. Much better in my opinion then what they generally compete against in the market.

I know it's a little out of budget but I think you get a LOT more rifle. CZ452 or 455. They have models with iron sights, heavy barreled ones, short ones, long ones etc. I imagine you could find something that would understudy your husbands larger caliber rifles. Good luck. Be safe.

A Savage MkII FVT is a fine rifle. We use it as a beginners competition rifle in the US. Other rifles will be prettier with wood stocks, but you won't get into more accurate rifles without breaking the 500 Canadian dollar spending limit you've set.

Get the FVT, you can upgrade the stock later if you so desire.

Hello en-tee,,,

That Savage MK-II FVT is a very fine rifle,,,
I don't own one but my friend does,,,
I've fired many a round through it.

The rifle is as inherently accurate (for me),,,
As My CZ-452 Trainer is.

You asked: "Is this a pretty decent gun?"

The short answer is: Yes, it is a very decent gun.

The Savage brand is well respected because their guns are well made,,,
And for bench rest shooting they dominate in that price range.

The peep sights on that model are very nice,,,
Your husband won't need to replace them with something better.

I think it's wonderful that you are trying to get him a nice gift.

My next question is: Do you have a sister? ;)

The CMP has a Master Instructor Course to provide instructors to do CMP GSM clinic. The course also covers the Rimfire Sporter Matches.

I'm more of a High Power Rifle shooter and concentrated on the Garand and Military Bolt action rifles. My experience with small bore was International Rifle ISU shooting, meaning heavy Anschutz single shot style rifles.

The Rimfire Sporter and the NRA don't allow those sort of target rifles.

So I inquired of those who coached the Rimfire Sporter matches as to the best gun for target shooting with light bolt action 22s.

Everyone I ask said to get the CZ 452 series rifle. That was several years ago and what I've seen since tells me they were right.

The CZ 452 series are well under your $500 budget. They run around $350.

I also agree with the CZ 452/455 series. I got a 452 ZKM trainer from a local gun store, I paid $500 out the door with taxes and fees. Very, very good rifles. I don't know much about Canada and pricing, but I know there are a good amount of CZ products there so I don't see why you couldn't find one.
