Looking For A New 'Flavor' of Muzzleloader Bullet

I'm looking for a new flavor of muzzleloader bullet, and am tired of paying the exorbitant prices of Hornady and Commercially cast bullets since I shoot so much.

Which would be the better of the two for my 50 cal. in-line CVA Muzzleloader?

360 gr. Improved Minnie mold from Lee

or

320 gr. R.E.A.L. Bullet mold from Lee

90% of my shots with the ML are out to 200 yds.
 
My thought is to get both and try them out. Lee molds are pretty inexpensive. And variety is the spice of life.

Of course I haven't actually used either, I've only cast roundball and .38spl (lee tumble lube 158 gr).
 
I've used an improved minie in my .58 and it does very well. I like the Lyman traditional minie better but that's just an aesthetic thing.
 
I have the R.E.A.L.

I like it for ease of loading and it is an accurate bullet in my .54. I also like Lee Molds as they are almost idiot proof. (Which makes them pretty good for me :eek: )

More than 40 years as an active traditional muzzle loader and now I find myself oddly in a position where I cannot contribute advise.
I know nothing about these bubble wrapped things Wal-Mart sells. And, yes, I'm a traditionalist snob. I don't intend to learn anything about them.
Does anyone here know of a source for good quality flints at reasonable prices? ;)

I have used - and still do - both of the bullets mentioned. They both shoot well - though I have not shot either at 200 yards. The modern minie is marginally more accurate in my little .50 carbine.
Flints - I normally buy Tom Fuller flints from Track of the Wolf. Just recently I bought a bunch of yellow French flints at a very reasonable price (can't find the link though - I'll keep looking.)

i get decent groups @ 100 yards with the 360gr lee minie in my CVA Accura. I actually need to start casting some up and practice with them again
 
I cast and use the 250 gr. R.E.A.L. pure lead. they are a pleasure to cast and load. I lube with yellow 1000 lube on my fingertip. Very accurate bullet. Haven't tried them beyond 100 yds. I shoot the CVA ACCURA 50 cal.

I only know that they have actually managed to make a muzzleloader more expensive to shoot than a modern centerfire rifle and to me, that completely misses the point of shooting a muzzleloader.

The 200 grain .45 REAL bullet works quite well in the Ruger Old Army revolver.
 
I cast and shoot both out of my .50 and prefer the Minnies over the REAL. I seldom cast for the REAL and sure have a bunch of the Minnies. For the most part, I shoot PRB in my sidelocks and Lead pistol bullets in .44 of .45, in Sabots, in my Hunter In-Lines. I also cast and shoot MaxiBalls and they give good performance.

That and then some. Being more of a Traditional shooter, I refuse to fall into many of these traps but they are in the business of selling new product every year. Archery has really gone over the edge. You have to ask yourself; How much is good enouogh? :rolleyes:

how can you put a price tag on something thats so fun and addicting?

The traditionalist talk crap about us spending $2- $3 per shot while they spend $2,000 + on a rifle with just art work carved into the stock!

Just buy/shoot whatever you want and shut up about it :D

Just trying to respond to the OP's question. I certainly do not have any problem with what you shoot. Nor do I care. As for fun, I actually double my fun by casting/running my own lead and shooting a deer with same. Again, I use to make my own arrows and got a whole bunch of satisfaction killing deer with them. Just a personal thing and if it doesn' appeal to you, that's okay with me. :D
Same for shooting my traditionals as they are more fun for me than my in-lines.

I appreciate letting people shoot what ever they like without criticism or condescension but I'd own one of those guns in a minute.

Back to the OP - has anyone shot either the Lee modern minie or the REAL at 200 yards? I'm wondering how they did and what the load was. The 200 yard shot is something that the modern MLers do well.
