Looking for a new .45

I am considering inmproving my current .45 ACP to something better. I like 1911-style pistols, but I prefer a thicker grip and a ten-round capacity, if possible. My specs, loosely, would be:

1. Ten round minimum capacity
2. Capable of cocked and locked carry; DA or Safe Action ok, but not preferred
3. Less that $1,000 or so.

What are your suggestions?

You just described the HK USP45, almost word for word.

Double stack, 10 rounds, Variants 1 & 2 can be carried cocked and locked, and they run around $650 - $700.

LOVE my HK!

The other choice that pops in my head right off the bat is a Para-Ordnance P14, but I don't have any experience with them.

I believe the CZ97 can be carried c & l, I could be wrong on that point but it is worth a look nonetheless.

Ditto on the Para Ordnance thing.Excellent guns.

Hey skevlar, where in the world do you get a Wilson anything(firearm) for less than $1000.00?

I've seen a few Kimber hi-caps around the gun shows, too.

Add my vote to the Para-Ord, particularly the P13.45. You can pick up 13 round clips for around 60-75 bucks, and 10 rounders are plentiful.

FireStorm makes a mini-compact 45ACP that has the same external functions as any other SA 1911 (including cocked and locked) but takes a 10 round double stack magazine. I have seen them for about $300.

Paraordnance P-13. This gives you your 1911 config, but with a thicker grip because of the double-stack mags. Replace the mag springs though.

Cocked and locked sounds like your preference, so I would steer you to the HK USP. Should be around $800 or so depending on where you go.

I own a Glock 21, and I couldn't ask for more. If you plan to go concealed carry, that wouldn't make a lot of sense, though the G30 most definitely would.

You like 1911s. You want 10+ rounds and a thicker grip. You prefer cocked/locked single action carry.

Para Ordnance. No question about it.

Add one more vote for the Para Ordnance P-13. Take CWL's advice about replacing the mag spring though. That is the only problem I've ever had with mine.

Ok, so far, you guys have recommended I look at:

H&K USP - shot one, rather liked it!
CZ97
Wilson KZ-45 - may have a hard time getting one under $1k
Para Ordinance - Ok, these look very nice!
Glock 21 or 30
EAA Witness
Firestorm
Bul M-5
Springfield Hi-Cap Loaded

Hmm, I will start looking at these in the shops and see what fits my hands better. I suspect a Springfield or Para Ordinance will wind up getting the nod.

Thanks!

If you like accuracy and realiabilty...cz97

and you can pick up 2-3 of em for $1000. These are very accurate guns. If you want combat accuracy any of the guns mentioned will due, but if you want really tight groups on paper or during competition, the 97 will be very hard to beat at any price. You owe it to yourself to at least hold one before you write your check for one of the other guns. -ddt

p.s.

Also when in doubt pick a cz over a eaa witness any day. the price difference is not enough to warrant getting a clone. CZ is often imitated but never equaled.
