Looking for a good first shotgun

Hey all, I'm a long-time rifle shooter (target shooting) who is planning on picking up a shotgun in the next few weeks, also for targets (trap, skeet, etc.)...

I've done quite a bit of shooting with my good friend's Remington 870, and know that the 870 is favored by many. It's high on my list.

But I've also had some time with an FN police model and a Mossberg 500. I liked both, the FN a little more than the Mossberg.

I also had fun with a cheap New England .410. Not great for targets - at my skill level, anyway - but a lot of fun. I'm looking mostly at 12 ga, though.

I'm looking in the sub-$300 range, and I don't care about break-action, pump, etc. Since it's targets, I favor a two-shot or pump over a single-shot. But my mind is open.

Any advice is helpful!

The 870 and 1000 are both good choices. I've owned an 780 Wingmaster for almost forty years and have never had any problems with it.

Thanks to all of you. Looks like an 870 or 1100 for me. Gun show coming up Saturday, I know what's going to be on my mind...

What Turkish junk is out there? First I've heard of that, though it doesn't surprise me. I always go with quality over price whenever possible...been burned too many times going the other way. Once bitten, twice shy, they say.

BSA, I have one and I would under no circumstance by another. Mine broke and I sent it to the factory, it took 6 months to get back *and* they didn't even fix it completely.

CZ unfortunately sells 'Turkish' shotguns under their name because they don't make their own.

But just try both...870 and 500. Both are fine. Pick up a Wingmaster 870 if you find one at a really good price though.

Got a wingmaster!

At today's gun show, I picked up a beautiful condition 870 Wingmaster at a good price. I really love it - shot clays all afternoon with it. My good friend picked up a Mossberg Persuader ... interesting shotgun, earned a lot of stares at the range. Pretty nice, though.

Thanks again to all who posted!

Congratulations on a good purchase!

Hahahaha! I shoot skeet with a mossberg persuader, I even took it to the national youth tournament in Detroit earlier this year. If you want stares, go to a national event with a $200 dollar riot shotgun.  :D I was kinda dissapointed that there were only about 4 other pump-guns there. :( I like pump-guns.

The reason I use a riot gun is because long barrels tend to throw me off, I do much better with a short one. Makes leads seem kinda odd though (and by odd, I mean almost non-existent)

Your friend has the rugerdude seal of approval. :)
