Looking for a good cartridge

I've been a wheelgunner (and rimfire automatic shooter) for the last eleven years, and have plenty of experience with revolver cartridges. However, I've just acquired a 9mm automatic as my new carry gun (PT92) and have decided to go with the reliable standard pressure 115 grain JHP. The only issue is that, while I've shot plenty of other people's 9mm pistols, I've never shopped for the ammo, so I have very little idea of what brands to go with for this type of ammunition.

It looks like Federal, Magtech, Sellier & Ballot, Remington, and Speer Gold Dot are the primary contenders. I've had great ballistics from Magtech and S&B loads with .357 & .44 magnum revolvers, so I'm tempted to go with them, but I have no personal experience with what sort of reliability their products have in semi-automatic weapons.

Any suggestions as to what brand I should go with?

Assuming it functions reliably in your gun, Speer Gold Dot is a great round. I like the 124 grain +P variety.

Do a search on You Tube for Tnoutdoors9. He does some great amateur ballistic testing for a variety of rounds.
 
I've had the best luck with speer gold dots and hornady tap (both in 124 grain) in terms of reliability and expansion. I feel very comfortable with either round.
 
Welcome to the Automatic world. You should like the PT92 (I have a 92FS and I love it). For general shooting I like Remington UMC, Federal Red box, and the Winchester white box (all are quite cheap). Blazers work well too. My more preferred rounds are the Federal American Eagle and the Rem UMC's. The UMC's seem to be the 'nicest' shooting rounds but pretty much everything shoots well in the 92's. I almost always shoot 115gr, I do use 124gr American Eagle or the 124gr Sellier Bellot for my defense rounds.
 
For range fodder, the Winchester White Box and Blazer Brass are what I use the most. Both are fine. Standard Blazer aluminum cased ammo works fine, too, but I prefer the brass. If it's for self defense/carry, don't know.

Well the OP asked for good but he didn't say good for what. Some here have gone in the direction of range ammo and some of the ammo mentioned may or may not be fine for that. But he did mention "new carry gun" and for carry most of what been mentioned is, for lack of a better word, crap. Personally I think that once you delve into the world of expanding bullets much of it's voodoo science. What I mean is there is such a small difference in effectiveness for a givin cartridge between an el'cheapo HP/SP bullets and premium HP/SP bullets to not be worth talking about. NOTE: I was talking about the bullets. So does mean that premium ammo is a waste of time and money? Heck no, for the most part you get what you pay for. Premium ammo will get you better accuracy, consistency and reliability 9 out of 10 times (or better).

No one can really tell what will work best in the OP's new gun. He's decided on standard pressure 115's so I'd recommend that he buy as many different brands of premium 115 ammo that he can find and put the gun through the paces. But to call Winchester WB, S&B, Remington UMC, etc good ammo, especially for carry, is a stretch to say the least.
