Looking for a .308 bolt action

I am thinking about purchasing a .308 bolt action mag fed scope mount rifle, and would like to get opinions as to what specific models you have found to be solid, reliable, and good performance. Cost is a mild concern; I'm not looking to break the bank. If there are options for more than 6 rnd mags..that would be of interest. My basic uses are hunting and long range target shooting.

Breaking the bank means different things for different people. What is your target price range?

A quick internet search tells me that if you want more than 6 rounds in a detachable mag bolt action, your bank is most likely going to be broken. I found a couple that meet your specs, and I put in links just in case your bank is not so easily broken as mine.

If you are looking for something a bit more affordable, you might consider a more standard magazine capacity. There are plenty of options in the 3 - 6 round capacity range that will do a fine job and be far more affordable.

Of course, I am certainly not the final voice on such matters, so if there are other folks with more options, there may yet be hope:)

I am still curious to know the projected budget. Both the Ruger Gunsite and Rem 700 Police have MSRP around $1000.00 - either would count as a bank breaker for me. It is all relative, though. Too expensive for me may be inexpensive for others...
 
or rem 700 sps tatical then get detach mag system not as good set up as the police but will save you like 300 ish bucks and it was for me a bank breaker also but i bought mine peice by peice as i could to build it as with most of my guns. heck i have $950 in a marlin x-7 vh 308 bolt gun but it didnt happen over night.
 
This photo shows my Remington model 660:

- short and light
- very accurate
- sturdy built all the way through

The 660 went out of production nearly 40 years ago but many avialble throu GunBroker and other sites.

The Savage 10FCP with the 10 round DBM goes for about a grand.

One option is to look for a used Savage, and get aftermarket bottom metal (from CDI, around $200), that will take AICS mags ($75)....you might be able to do it for a bit less than a new factory rifle if you do the inletting and install yourself.

Gunsite Scout would be a good choice were it not for your long range target requirement, IMO. The reviews I've read Gunsite is that it's a 1-2 minute rifle with factory match ammo, and that it can shoot minute of angle with developed handloads. Decent accuracy, but keep in mind that it also has a 16" barrel, which will limit velocity for long range.

I like the rifle- and would love to own one- but long range isn't it's niche and I think you'd be better served by something else.

Why the need for the large capacity DBM?
 
Sometimes it is easy to get hung up on certain features that we think we must have. Chances are you won't find all of those features on the same gun, and if you do they may not be on the best gun. Buy the best gun you can find for your uses and learn to live with some features, or customise it later.

A DBM is something you can probably do without and get a good gun. Winchester, Howa, and Weatherby all are 5+1 capacity in their guns with floorplates.

You can't really use more than that in a bolt rifle anyway. All are rock solid. The Winchester is the more refined, but most expensive. You can pick up a Weatherby for $350 right now and have something that will last a lifetime.
 
You should look at the Howa/Hogue and Weatherby Vanguard S2. The Vanguard and Howa use identical actions (Weatherby buys them from Howa), but the stocks are different. The Howa can be purchased with a detachable magazine, and Howa sells a magazine kit that can be installed in the Weatherby. Both rifles have strong actions, three position safeties and crisp two-stage triggers. Weatherby guarantees one MOA with high quality ammunition. Both can be purchased with 20 inch bull barrels. I bought a Vanguard S2 for $429 (list was $449, but I bargained them down a bit).
