Looking for a 22LR: Anschutz 54?

Hello,

I was looking for a 22LR to get to spend some more time behind a rifle. Preferably a bolt action and sub-MOA accurate up to 100 meters. Generally I ignore high end target rifles due to their weight, size, price and single shot feeding, but I got offered a left-handed Anschutz 54 for a mere 120 euros. I didn't get the chance to inspect it, but I thrust the owner when he says it's in good condition.

At first I was not really interested, but after looking around on the internet a bit I found that they average 800 dollars USED? Is this too good to be true? I also found range reports including 0.25 inch groups at 100 yards.

Does anyone have experience with this rifle and should I get it?

I wish someone would offer me a deal like that...

I'm not left-handed, but I am left-eye-dominant, and I'd snap that up in a heartbeat.

Same for me, I prefer to use a right-handed action while shooting left, but I could live with the left-handed action. I guess I'll follow your advice, thanks guys.

It looks like one I owned a long time ago. They put the bolt on the wrong side and it is a pain in the #@$ to load when your slinged up. sold mine 22 years ago.

Those old Anschtuz rifles are capable of remarkable accuracy. My university rifle team shoots with them, as well as with a few BSA Martini-actions (prized for their supposedly higher theoretical accuracy, however ours have a habit of slam firing, which I am not a fan of). Now, none of us are capable of anywhere near the accuracy that the rifle itself is mechanically capable of; at the most recent competition I shot our best score and frankly I am at best a mediocre marksman at this point . . . we suck, but our rifles our superb despite their age. We compete against teams with thousands of pounds sterling worth of gear, olympic standard stuff; some like to blame our gear, but really its nothing to do with the gear. Those rifles are capable of better accuracy than the overwhelming majority of shooters.

The heavy barrel, superb construction, Anschutz's excellent sights, good ergonomics and the inherent accuracy potential of the .22LR make these rifles absurdly accurate, and capable of it over decades of use.

If, as you say, you trust the man who tells you its in good condition, 120EU is too good to pass on. My advice, for what it is worth, would be to snap it up if you are into olympic style-prone shooting. These things are beautifully designed for the job they are meant for and at that price it is a bargain.

All the best,

Scouse
