Looking for .308 Win. Sugestions? How about the HOWA rifles? Other?

I have a few hi power rifles but no .308 win. I know, its unfair and I intend to remedy this oversite. I was thinking I want access to more range time and cheap 7.62x51 ammo without the time obligation of reloading [which I do and love but dont always have time for].

This rifle must have a stainless BBL in a synthetic stock.
I intend to use it for long range plinking and a nice all-weather deer & wild boar rifle. NOT LONG RANGE TACTICAL! (no need of a PSS or 110FP Sniper gun for me - yet)

Here are the guns being considered:

1) Remington ADL or BDL 700
2) Howa (mod 1500?)
3) Savge 110 (not the tactical)

I am thinking of getting the rifle at Walmart or Turners (www.turners.com) which is the local gun dealer. I dont know if it will be more $$$$ to order one special but I think I will need to do that as Ive never seen one of what I want in stock at these 2 stores.

I am asking for feedback on these guns and any others you folks can recomend. I want to spend <$250 to $400 as I am a student and income is tight (a big reason for wanting a good mil surplus chambering in .308 Win.) Even though its well regarded I think the Rem 700 is outa my reach wich leaves choices 2 and 3 for me, I guess.

Main criteria:

> chambered in .308 Win.
> Stainless BBL
> Synthetic Stock
> Cost under $400
> Magazine floor plate removable (OPTIONAL)

Your wisdom and coments, as always, are much appreciated. My thanks in advance.

The Howa fits all of your criteria. (Price is just over, at approx. $419.00, but can be sometimes found on sale.)

It also has probably the slickest bolt operation I've found--impossible to cramp the bolt...

Good luck, weegee.

i used the search function on TFL site and could not find info on the howa. i like the one i saw in .270 at the gun store. i may have found a place with a good deal on em. i will keep ya all posted.

can anyone tell me the origins of the Howa? I heard they are basicly Weatherby Vanguards machined on the same lathes. Is that true? How do they get away with selling a Weatherby as a Howa?

Thanks.

The same rifle has been sold as a Mossberg, a "blank& blank", a Weatherby, an Interarms, and now under the maker's own name, Howa. Apparently Weatherby has decided not to offer the Vanguard anymore (it was their entry-level rifle, easier to machine than the Mark V action), so they're now free to sell it directly.

I bought a 7mag, stainless for $319.00 NEW at Bass Pro Shops, but they have only about 6 stores nationwide, so not an option for most folks. If you could settle for blued, they run about that price everyday.

Howa's website has been under construction for sometime (at http://www.legacysports.com) but you could call them for a brochure and dealer list--there are lots of models, most of which you'll never see at your local dealer....best, weegee.

does anyone know how to get in touch with HOWA? i looked them up on the web but could not find their rifle division. only their machining services.
