Looking at XDM .45 or USP .45, undecided

Well, I call upon TFL members to settle an internal debate within myself. I recently had the chance to fire both. I like the XDM, esp the 13 round magazine. I also like the USP, except I am left handed so I can see that becoming a pain real fast. Haven't shot the new HK45 so I can't comment. Unless I just charge the HK45 and get the $200 rebate.

Well, any and all advice appreciated. And yes, this is my first .45 that I will own personally. Always shot my uncles guns.

I'm guessing you own other pistols and other calibers...

They are vastly different pistols... Both high quality, many would say the HK is better quality; it certainly costs more.

So it may be down to which action type you prefer, or cost may factor in as well.

In the end many would say the HK is better... And it may be arguably better, but I am not convinced it is vastly better in a practical manner.

Get the one you like better for whatever reason that is. They will both serve you well.

Can you elaborate? If you're referring to the safety/decock lever, you can get a V2 control lever and move it to the right side of the gun so the only non-ambi thing is the slide stop lever.

If you go HK45, then it's 100% ambi.

I would say between the XDM and USP to go with the USP for sure. I have owned the XDM 45(and XDM 45 Compact) as well as the USP 45. If you get the USP, be sure to pickup a match trigger kit and install it. It's very nice.

If you can, I would actually recommend the HK45 though. Sure, it's slightly lower capacity, but everything else is better. Better ergos, better sight radius, slightly better accuracy. It's a beautiful piece of equipment and with the $200 rebate you can get into one for around $750.... that's a steal.

I had an xdm in .40 and loved it.
It was very solid, well-balanced, accurate and dependable. I've never had my hands on a USP, so I can't make an out and out comparison.

It's probably a win/win comparison. Whichever fits your hands better is probably where you should go.

If you have already fired both guns and liked them I'm not sure how much I can contribute.

I would go with the HK just because of the rebate. You will not be disappointed with the gun, at least not the reliability or the fit and finish, which are both outstanding.

Full disclosure, a USP40c was my first shellshucker and I love it. The fit and finish is phenomenal, the finest of any gun I've ever owned. It shoots the .40 like a kitten. The worst thing I can say about the gun is that it simply doesn't fit small hands. But you've already shot it so it must not be a problem for you. There are other minor issues like the DA pull and the annoying proprietary rail, but that's about it.

I've also never shot an XD so I can't give you a fair comparison. But the USP is just a great pistol. And for my money it's best looking polymer gun ever made.

I have no personal experience with the USP but I have fairly decent experience with XDs of all sizes and lines. my first handgun was an XDM45 4.5 and current go to concealed carry piece is an XDM45 compact. I heavily recommend them. my XDM45 has over 1500 trouble free rounds through it and my 4.5 had over 1000 when I traded it for an XDM9 4.5. they are very good guns, good fit and finish, good triggers. personal experience is that they are very accurate and very reliable. I heavily recommend them.

Having shot both, it's a tough comparison... the XDM is a nicer gun all the way. Ibhabe smaller hands so I like the fit of the XDM. The USP just doesn't shoot as well for me . Overall quality of prefer the XDM

You have got to be kidding me....

The price point is certainly a determining factor in this case, but to say the build quality of the XDM is better than the USP 45 is absurd. Show me an XDM 45 with 300k rounds through it.... Federal ammo did just that with a USP 45.

Up until a few years ago when I caught the 1911 bug I shot the heck out of my USP .45. In fact in my hands it shot more accurately than some of the 1911's I've owned. Recently sold it to fund another 1911 and because I haven't shot it in quit some time. Now sadly I am having sellers remorse. I've also shot a few XDm's and will say hands down the HK is much nicer to me. Price not being a factor the choice is a no brainer.

Have owned a XDm 9mm 4.5 for about five years. Lost count long ago of the number of rounds, but I suspect over 4K or 5K have gone down range through the pistol. Impressed enough to buy a XDm 45 5.25 last year. It's it winner too (IMHO).

Haven't shot the HK, but I do own a DA/SA with a decocker. For shooting IDPA and use as a home defense firearm, I prefer the simple XDm striker system.

Buy both!!!
All kidding aside, I love my XDM's. Can't make the comparison. But if you have shot both, buy the one that feels better to you.

You have to go with the one that's most comfortable. I find the HK too large for my medium hand. I like my XDm. The most ergonomically appealing semi auto I find to be the Walther P99. 9 or .40 only. Whatever works for you.

texastea88, did you ever make a decision?! :D

:p

I'd go with the USP. It's a much more solid gun and shoots as soft as a .40. A USP 45 is a scaled down MARK 23, with all the tolerances and German over engineering it's well worth the extra money. Once you feel both side by side I don't think you'll pass the USP.

It's not, actually. The internals are quite a bit different. They share the same magazine body (with a different base plate) - that's about it. None of the trigger mechanisms are the same.

I own both, the XD and the HK USP compact 40. I love both. Beyond that there is no comparison ... the HK is the best betwixt these two, and that is beyond contestation!:)
