Looking at AR's at the gun show this weekend...

Hello All,

First off...Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy this time with family, friends, football, and food.

Now for my question...This weekend, I'm going to a gun show and I'm looking to buy my first rifle. From what I've read, the AR seems like the best one suited for my needs (mostly target shooting and some varmint hunting.) My question is, what is considered a good price for a used (good condition)and new colt AR respectively?

Also, I know that the uppers can be interchanged to chamber different calibers. What other calibers besides .223 and 9mm can the ar handle? Thanks folks and have a great turkey day.

7.62X39, 300 Whisper, plus someones done just about all the pistol cal, I think.
Prices? pre or post?
Now the AR bashers are going to crawl out of their holes and get you ;)
Won't be me, I'm a certified Glock basher.

Don't forget Bushie and Oly

Zauer, new Colt Match Target rifles such as the MT6700 are usually running $950-1150 in my area. The 6731 16" barrel for around $850-950, the 6601 H-Bar 20" about the same. These are post-ban guns. Pre-ban... add a bunch.

Also look at Olympic and Bushmaster. I recently picked up a new Bushie E2S 20" for seven bills out the door. Personally I much prefer the Bushie to Colt any day.

Prices of used are more difficult to guess... use the price of the new weapon to determine how good a deal is. Check out some prices of new models on http://www.gunbroker.com and http://www.gunsamerica.com to get some ideas before you go to the gun show.

Check out http://www.tromix.com for some 'sledgehammer' AR uppers.

Good Luck

AR Colt vs Bushmaster

I have both.
My Colt is the MT6700. I use it for high power at my local club. 20 inch HBar Barrel flattop w/ removable handle. I have added some of the usual refinements... lead weights in but stock, NM front sights, Peep inserts for the rear sights, etc.

My Bushmaster is a carbine w/16 inch Hbar Barrel, & flattop with removable handle. I use it as my field fun and protection rifle. Its amazing how accurate that little carbine is.

I am happy with each one. However the Bushmaster is a better value. IMHO. If you were in the Metro Detroit area, I could get you a great deal.
However Bushmaster prices post Y2k are terrific. The quality is just as good if not better than Colt. Plus you buy from a company that isn't weasling with the Feds.

It all depends on what you want to do. Currently I can not compete at Camp Perry with my removable handled AR. But I am not likely to compete for another couple years until, I can shoot at the next highest level. I like the flat tops for scope mounting, or adding a red dot on the carbine. Great versatility.

Dealer Cost Bushmaster XM15E2 (Target Rifle) 20" barrel HBAR
with Hard Case is $699 + shipping. Figure about 10-15% markup at a volume gun show or a favorite FFL dealer get a better discount with frequent business.

Colt's are much higher (not sure why?) looks like the MT6601 or MT6700 dealer cost is running about $950 currently. Perhaps betters deals are out there, but my wholesaler catalogs are at home. and I am at the in laws.

Go with the Bushmaster Target Rifle with a flat top Hbar. The you can shoot local highpower competition, and then put a scope on it for varmit.
Good Luck
