looking at an AR in .308..

So, I want to move up calibers. Love my 5.56 guns and I want something as close to those as possible, just in a more powerful, longer-range round (.308). Ideally like I said as close as possible. Modular. Accurate. Stripped down, probably a flat top. Real basic and ready to be built on. Reliable...

suggestions? Also, on a flat top .308 AR I'm confused as to whether standard AR irons are recommened or not, since the ballistics are different? Maybe it doesn't matter...

I'm very happy with my POF P-308. Match accurate and easy to scope or use irons.

I've also shot a DPMS LR-308, which is a little easier on the wallet and it was a 1 MOA or less rifle also.

Both of these rifles have the advantage of being compatible with Magpul Pmags, which are not only cheaper than the other types, but also superbly reliable.

More powerful, longer range than the 5.56...
Keep your lower...and build/buy an upper in 6.5 Grendel.

Excellent long range ballistics. Outperforms the .308 in every category except kinetic enery (duh...smaller pill). Unless you need that for knocking down bigger game at long range, the 6.5 Grendel stays supersonic further, has greater velocity, far less drop and drift.

At 1000 yards, only 242 inches of drop compared to 397 for the .308..
80 inches of drift vs. 98 in a 10 mph crosswind.
And only about 10% less energy at that distance- 531 vs. 581 for the .308

Comparisons based on 175 gr SMK's in .308 and 123 gr. Lapua in the 6.5.

Oh...and far less recoil doesn't hurt, either...

Handloading is almost mandatory to keep ammo costs reasonable...

My son just built his first AR in this caliber and it is impressive, to say the least.

Well I have both a 16" bbl LAR-6 6.8spc and a 20" bbl LAR-8 .308. If I had to choose between the two I'd keep the LAR-6 6.8spc.

It is the same size as the standard AR15, but has the trajectory of .223/.308 with 40% more power than the .223. This is a no-brainer for me, the only reason I even have the .308 is if I ever need to hunt game larger than deer or expect to make shots over 300 yards.

The LAR-6 6.8spc can handle everything else easily.

I'd choose an OBR, MWS or GAP10 if I had the funds. I currently own and shoot a LAR-8.

Larue OBR. Built in 20MOA rail, GREAT accuracy (hits at 1,000 yards w/ a 16" barrel). Good parts compatability. IIRC 1 MOA guarantee. About $3,000.

LMT MWS. Accurate, but IIRC just slightly less so than the OBR. Selected by the Brits. Quick change barrel. Good parts compatibility. About $2,300.

GA Precision GAP 10. Very accurate, 3/4 MOA guarantee (most GAP10s get closer to 1/2 MOA), pretty, built to your specs. Base price $2,650 or so.

DPMS Series. Crappy triggers, but reported 3/4 MOA. No guarantee on accuracy. Good parts compatibility. Inexpensive: $1,400 to $2,200 depending on model you choose. Only *BIG* negative is that you run the risk of getting a lemon and then you're pretty much screwed.

RRA LAR-8. Good 2 stage RRA trigger. 1 MOA guarantee. I get about 3/4 to 0.60 MOA on mine. Really poor parts compatibility, requires FAL mags and other modifications to take standard stocks and charging handles. Inexpensive: ~$900--$1,400

YMMV. Hope this helps.
