Looking at a bolt action- Remington or Savage?

Local dealer has Savage 10FP tactical, .308, 20" barrel or Remington 710 30-06 with Bushnell 3-9x40 scope pre-mounted, both priced at $369 each.

I have been thinking about a bolt gun for a while, like the Steyr Scout, don't have that kind of money. Figured the Savage would be nice, pick up a Tasco Super Sniper 10x42 for it.

Anyone have any good or bad to say about these rifles?

I can highly recommend the Savage -- those things are just accuracy machines. Slap that Tasco SS on it and you'll be set to drill holes through about anything you want. Mine hasn't let me down yet, and I've drug (well, dropped..) it though the muck and mud of Oregon quite a bit.

The stock on the Savage is a bit flimsy, at least mine is, but it is livable. Dual pillar bedded, too. Some people will complain about the Savage triggers, but the 110FP I picked up last year had a decent trigger w/ some tuning. You can always drop in a SharpShooter trigger if you feel like spending the extra cash.

I can't comment on the 710, but from what I hear it is "decent". I'm assuming they cut costs the same way Savage does, IE by slapping on a cheaper stock and some rougher parts.

The Savage is the better buy out of the two, IMO. Too bad it's not 30-06 though.. ;)

Mad, I'd have to agree with the Savage on this one. I'm usually a Remington man and if you were comparing the Savage to the 700VS then my answer would be different but not for the 710. I've not had any trigger time behind one but I have inspected and felt it in the shoulder and I was not happy with it. It just feels cheap in my opinion. You'll be happy with the Savage and down the road if you want to replace the trigger and stock(the two weak points) you can.

Remington or Savage

SAVAGE!! I have a 11G and it will out shoot the 700 BDL(which I traded). I have not had the rigger adjusted nor will I. The rifle is 223 and at 125 yards, groups are 3/4" with 50 grain ballistic tips and the barrel is not broke in.

GET the SAVAGE!!!

Here's why I say it. Before I bought my Savage 10 FP, in .308, I also looked really hard at thte Remington 710. The guy at the store even tried to talk me into making the purchase more than he pushed for me to buy the Savage.

Truth is, they can't sell them very quickly, if at all, and are trying to off load their crap on us. Too much plastic in the internals for me. If you buy the 710 you will be sorry, cause there will never be any parts available for it, and I doubt even Remingotn will keep it alive for two more years.

The only way I am buying a plastic (polymer) rifle is if it is made by Gaston Glock himself.

That's a nice price for the Savage. I have that rifle, but with the 24" barrel. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten the 20" barrel instead. I've shot both, and the accuracy and velocity differences are non-existent. But the difference in weight of an additional 4" of heavy barrel is noticeable.

I've not heard good things about the Rem 710 line yet, and this thread isn't changing that at all.

Both are cheaply made, but the remington is a whole nuther' level of cheapo!

See the last issue of nra "Rifleman" for an article on the Savage...hardened but not tempered,Yuck! Still they only harden the rings, so the soft underbly keeps it flexible and safe. The only hardened/tempered parts on the Remington is the bolt-FACE, and the barrel. Both are el-chepo button rifled.

Savage110= more steel, probably more accurate...good deal.

Remington= 710 increased corprate profit...no real deal for the consumer..now if it was 250...
