Looking Ahead to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Second

This Florida flap will certainly make Bush want to appoint strict constructionist to the court. That bodes VERY well for our agenda. The constitution stands in the way of the liberal agenda, so I must assume that any appointment will meet with very strong opposition in the Senate.

That said, everyone on both sides kept raising the justices as a reason for voting for Gore, or Bush. What justices are on the verge of retirement? We only have a four year certain timeline and if realistic about this, we may only have a two year timeline, considering that control of the senate is questionable after 2002.

Has anyone closely followed this issue? Any real information out there? Who is about to retire?

According to the so-called "talking heads" on TV it is rumored that Chief Justice Rehnquist wants to retire and is only waiting for a Republican President to appoint a conservative Justice to replace him. I don't know if that appointee becomes the Chief Justice or one of the other Justices moves up to fill that role.

I think it is totally the President's decision with the approval of the Senate.
