looking 4 input for New Scope

I have used cheap end scopes on .22s but have used open sites on my older hunting rifles. I have recently bought a Remington 700 in .308. My normal hunting rifle is and don't laugh at me, a Winchester 30/30 that my grandfather gave over 20yrs. ago but it shoot straight and has take a few nice mounts and kept meat in the freezer.

I want to put a nice top end scope on it. What would you think is a good choice. Not looking for a night vision scope or something the size of the hubble telescope. Just a high quality scope for hunting. Perfer not to spend over $1000.00 but if the scope is just that good then it may be an option.

Any pros and cons from your own experiance would helpful.

Thank you all in advance.

I would think a nicy lupy... with a well built rings and since your shooting the win 30/30 without a scope then a 3x9 will fit the bill and leave you cash over for ammo and hopefully trigger time.

Rwdycwby2u:

Witch rifle are you going to scope. I take it that you are scoping the M 700. You have taken many deer with the 30-30 so I'm guessing that your shots are 100 yards or so. You couldn't do better than a Leupols 2X7, 2.5 X 8 or a
3X9. Happy hunting.

Yes the scope will be for the 700, is there any models that have issues compared to other from the Leupols, or even better brands. I want to get the top of the line if its with in reason. Spending more than the rifle is not really an issue.

look into the nightforce or gunworks g7 scopes great for that 308 if want to shoot some long range shots or just want top of the line

I am looking for a longer range, that was the reason to buy the .308 . 100 to 120 yrd with my old 30/30 just is not cutting it as much anymore. Plus im sure my eye sight is not getting any better. I will check out the nightforce and gunworks.

Thank you for the input.

i just put a vortex viper 6.5x20-50 on my 700 in .308. i have yet to shoot it, but i have messed around with it non stop since i mounted it. i took it out and aimed at the power pole with a street light several yard from it, i was happy with how much light it gathered. i would guess it was about 150 yards out. 459.00 with a life time no bs warranty. i did use a leupold one piece base, with dovetail rings.

I will recommend Nikon. You can get a high end Nikon for $500-$700 and be in good company with Leupold and Zeiss. Good companies to look at would be Nikon, Zeiss, Leupold. I don't think Nightforce is what you are looking for. IMO that will be overkill for you. The most widely used scope size is 3-9x40. I think that would probably work just fine for you as well. Maybe look into a 4-12 if your eyes are getting bad. I've got a 3-9 and usually set it on 6. I sometimes wish I had gone to a 4-12 for when I am at the range I'd be be able to use the scope as a spotter but meh.

Vortex optics have also been getting rave reviews but they are newer and dont have near the track record of Leupold, Nikon, or Zeiss but I wouldn't steer you away from them. Look at opticsplanet to compare scopes and read reviews. They are the single best place I have found for comparisons of scopes and usually the best prices too.

Happy riflescope hunting!
