Im looking to buy a first handgun and would appreciate some opions. Ive shot before but not widely with handguns only a Colt Anaconda .44, which was way more power than Im looking for. Any recomendations?

Start with a good quality recent manufacture, .22 rimfire.
Either auto or wheelgun. This is the one thing that IMO, you'll never regret buying and keep it forever. Not to mention fun AND cheap to shoot.
If you don't want to go that way, I'd say if you wanted powerful w/ out the shock of the .44, get a full size (or for carry a 4" model) 1911 .45. I prefer Kimber, but see what's out there that YOU like. Colt, SA, STI, ECT....
Functionally they are the same pick onw you like.

Well, since you're askin in the semi auto forum, I'd be inclined to say that the semi's have been calling your name from the display cases. They do that ya know ;)
Any particular one catch your attention? Any style you think you'd favor? What use do you have in mind?

What are you going to use your gun for? Concealed carry? Home defense? Target shooting? Hunting? You need to tell us these things before you can get an informed recommendation.

Get a decent .22lr first.Possibly a Ruger Mark II.This will enable you to shoot a lot for very little cost. The gun could last you the rest of your life.Second,i would get one of the Bulgarian Makarovs that are about to be released. They use 9mm Makarov ammo which is readily available on the web at good prices.I would not let a gun shop steer you toward a Glock as they are so fond of doing.I believe a new shooter should have a gun that has a manual safety.

My first pistol was a TZ99, a 9mm semi-auto with no manual safety. If nothing else, I made darned sure that I had my finger off the trigger until I was on the target! I think that helped set some good habits.

Although when I use the pistol to introduce people completely new to shooting, it is disconcerting to see them with their fingers *always* on the trigger! Gah!
