I have had a 35(40s&w) and now have a 34 MOS they are sweet shooting guns.
The 17L seems a bit long for a practical pistol. The 34/35 are basically the same size as a Govt length 1911. Big for CCW use but can work with the right wardrobe choices. As a HD gun they would be great
Ive recently gotten into the M&P line and would heartily recommend you look at the Pro series with the long slide. The trigger can be made pretty darn good. Much better than any Glock trigger. Its just a better mousetrap
I appreciate the replies. I already have the Glock 17, PPQ, XDm, FNS, as well as most of the others mentioned in 4"-4.5" barrel lengths. My LGS has the Glock34, PPQ long slide, M&P Pro, FNS long slide and XDm long slide in stock. I was hoping to get a consensus as to which one might be a standout, but the way you guys are talking, I'll wind up with all of them
My post will be of very little help UNLESS you are a dreamer or just enjoy learning about what's out there.
Admitting up front that I am biased, I know the best 9mm long slide and my shootin' buddy owns one. It's the six inch Smith & Wesson Performance Center PPC9. These were made only for a few years around 2003-2004 and S&W never actually cataloged or advertised them. In fact, there was only one way to get them when they were made: you had to order direct from S&W and just one other bit, haha... You had to have sworn LE credentials and order it on Department Letterhead.
The guns were designed for PPC competition. The way it shoots... well, they are pretty amazing handguns.
just make sure the slide isn't to heavy for 9mm or shoot +p out of it. a 5 inch 1911 for example reciprocates noticeably slower in 9mm then 45.
the glock and XD have lightened slides for that very reason. I would recommend trying the pistols first if possible make sure you like how it feels. Especially if you plan to compete with it.
Dan Wesson has some very nice 1911s chambered in 9mm. I have a Guardian and an ECO and both are great little guns. Very solid, very accurate and fun to shoot.
The Colt Government Model Competition Series is another good 1911 chambered in 1911. It too is nice looking, accurate, and a solid shooter.
What will be its primary purpose? I personally like the 17L but I think it's too long for carry. Strictly a range/competition gun for me. If you have an open end holster, it'll fit fine as long as you don't care if it the slide get scratched.
cmdc: My Son bought me a 17L a few years ago. And it is now my favorite 9mm. I like it more every time I use it. And I use it a lot. It's a great gun, and I use mine for just about everything.

Why would you expect a longer barrel to be more accurate?
Longer sight radius?
Better sights on the 17L?
Those might help the shooter, but they won't make the gun itself any more accurate.
Does the 17L have some kind of improved target grade barrel, maybe?
Other accuracy improving modifications?
I'm not trying find fault with your expectations, but rather would really like to know - honest.
