I have a Texas CHL and carry my Glock everyday. I also keep a cheap single shot 12 gauge behind the seat of my vehicle. I am curious if anyone knows the legalities of a concealed longgun in TX, OK, AR, MO, LA, MS, AL, GA, and TN.

Can you point me in the right direction? I tried www.packing.org but they seem to be focused on conceal handgun laws.

Unfortunately the best way to learn about this is to read the law yourself, or to find a practicing weapons law lawyer in each of the various states. Not fun, but probably necessary. Some of the state codes are available online, but sometimes things aren't covered and you'll have to find case law to determine how the courts interprete the statutes.

As long as you don't carry your rifle or shotgun "in an manner calculated to alarm", and the rifle or shotgun is within the Federal length limits, then Texas pretty much lets you carry your longarm as you will--as far as I know. Laws change in a hurry, so you'd be wise to check with your local DA.

Reading at http://www.packing.org in another thread, I followed a link to the Georgia page. Anyhow, any gun (long or short) in one's vehicle, visible or concealed, is okay in Georgia.

Georgia has 1,000' school zone prohibition, unless you're dealing with kids' transportation to and from a school, or have a CHL.

Georgia recognizes Texas CHLs.

Art what happens if your house is within that 1000' limit?? Are you barred from owning guns?

I think that was challeneged in court, and it was overturned in favor of the home owner.

Thanks guys. I'm mainly interested in AR, OK, and TX.

I have an identical thread going at GlockTalk and it was suggested that the Parks and Wildlife Co. might have laws against having a loaded hunting weapon in a vehivle during hunting season.

I am going to pull the shell out of the chamber to avoid any problem. It isn't really there for defense so it's not much of an issue.

Also I am going to run a rubber coated cable through it and through the base of my seat and pad lock it. This would take away any way it could be construed that I was hunting with it correct? I am also doing this because I have to leave my Glock in the truck at some of the places I go so I can use the same cable to secure it as well.

Thanks for your help. I just need to find out more about AR and OK now. I'm going to muddle through their firearms laws now.

Some of the bigger cities in TX may have local ordinances against loaded long arms.

The rationale was to bust Hispanic street gans that were hot on driving around with SKSs in the car.

Whether a locality can do this is a legal point and I ain't no stinking lawyer.

You might check it out.

Remember also if a cop thinks you are out of line you may beat the charge but you can't beat the ride.

Why the shotgun anyway? It's hard to deploy from a car unless stopped. Carry two Glock 21s with hi-cap mags :)

How about a round of the always popular 12 gauge vs AR debate?

In GA its OK. In AL it violates the state hunting laws (loaded long gun within so many feet of a roadway right of way). Fine is about $40. Handgun in vehicle is OK in GA without permit. AL handgun requires permit.

Texas has no restrictions on longgun carry. They can be open or concealed, loaded or empty. In 1989 Texas passed the pre-emption law making gun laws uniform across the state. San Antonio has tried to ignore that to a certain extent, so if you are arrested you will need to sue the city. I might know an attorney that would take your case if there is a problem, Houston just lost a $300,000 judgement in a federal constitutional rights case so he might be willing to try a state law case now.

In Oklahoma you may transport in a motor vehicle any handgun, rifle, or shotgun, open and not concealed, unloaded, at any time. Oklahoma also passed pre-emption. My friend has had some strange looks riding his Harley down I-40 with a CAR-15 bungeed to the handlebars, but there is nothing illegal about it. The law is in Title 21, around section 1272 or 1278.
