Longest Rifle Shot Ever Made

What is the longest rifle shot ever made or the longest anyone knows of? I don't mean sniper combat shots. If you Google "longest rifle shot" all you get is sniper shots. I believe the longest combat shot is about 3,070 yards. But I know there are guys that have made longer shots on paper/prairie dogs/milk jugs etc. So what's the longest non-combat shot you know of?

How do you know this? If you know it, why can't you document it?

The longest rifle shot I have ever heard of is the shot by that British sniper. Don't recall if it was Iraq or Afghanistan.

According to Guinness the longest confirmed kill was 1.54 miles. It was fired by Craig Harrison of the UK's Household Cavalry and he did it twice with an L115A3 sniper rifle.

YOU KNOW, this is not really a big deal since there was a sesesh civil War officer killed with one deliberate shot by a sniper right at one [1] mile. The bullet took four seconds to get there and kill him right in front of his tent. The distance was measured before hand by triangulation and good ol' mathamatics.

Civil War general.....

Is that the same Civil War era general who got smoke-checked after telling his troops the enemy was too far away to get them?

Oh the irony....

Go to "Varmint Hunters com". They have records of the longest shots on prairie dogs. It is well documented. Kregg Slack & Bruce Artus killed a prairie dog at 3125 yards in 2008, documented in the July, 2008 issue of the Varmint Hunters magizine.
They used a wildcat cartridge called the 340 Gordy supermag, which is based on a 338 lapua.
They have hit several dogs at 3600 + but they made it into the holes so they weren't confirmed kills.

The longest sniper shot was made by an Australian sniper at 3,079 yards with an M82A1 .50 BMG. I have spoken with Gordy Gritters about his 3600+ yard shots. Just needed to know if anyone had shot further.

Long range hunting.com has documented .long shots on groundhogs. There is a video of a gunsmith named Shawn Carlock who developed the 338 edge round who has a video of a 768 yrd shot that's is great to see. I know 768 isn't long but the video is very cool.

That was general John Sedgwick and the range was around 1000 yards and I do believe was the longest sniper shot of the war.

Of course today there's literally an "App for That" which I'm sure the snipers of 'back in the day' would marvel at...

Guns; targets, ranges.....

First off, I'm not much into target shooting or long range rifles so I wouldn't know of any non-sniper/marksman records.
As for the military sniper hits(and only hits count :D ), the "record" sniper hit to my knowledge was by a UK Corporal with a .338Lapua milspec sniper rifle.
The military record prior to that was a army sniper from Canada(not Austrailia or NZ) who used a .50BMG rifle. I think it was 2002, in Afganistan but Id need to check. The sniper & other military reports say the .50BMG bullet sped the entire distance hit a metal object on the ground & bounced up, striking the enemy combatant in the upper torso.
They re-measured the range & documented the EKIA. The army sniper even says the record shot was 1 in a 1,000,000.

Somewhere around twenty two miles

Of course the US Navy claims that the 16" cannon on their Iowa class battleships as being 'rifles' so take that for what it's worth.

I was going to say..."Define 'rifle'". :D

That was at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, AKA "The Bloody Angle", not too far from here.

This marker is said to mark the spot where the General fell. The "They can't hit an elephant at this distance" remark is quoted on one of the information boards in the background. AFAIK, the snipers position is unknown.

That would be Rob Furlong (2430m in 2002) who held the sniper record until Craig Harrison (2475m in 2009) edged him out.

But the Navy doesn't claim, "One shot -- One kill."

That said, I imagine if they dropped one of those anywhere close to you it would probably do the job.

The Craig Harrison shot has been beaten by two Australian snipers, firing simultaneously with Barrett 107s. They don't know who made the hit, so I'm guessing they both were just having a crack, and with 20 rounds between them one was bound to hit.

If you went out every day taking 3000+yard shots at ground hogs, one of them is also bound to hit. If you are merely taking pot shots it's really not much of an achievement. I'm quite happy to be proved wrong though.
