Longest echo achieved with gunshot.

Gun related. Honest.

The use of a pistol, blanks and a seemingly endless series of tunnels in Scotland have helped create the world's longest echo at 72 seconds, blitzing the previous 15 second Guiness world record. No idea what gun it was though.

Here is a link to a recording of the shot. It gets so faint I can't hear it on my computer after about 25 seconds but nonetheless..... :D

They would presumably want the loudest cartridge available or the one with the widest acoustic range. Perhaps some techie types can clarify. Tokarev? .44 Mag? .357Mag? Judging by the sound I'd guess .357...

Either way, it sounds impressive!!

shooting my .270 in the mountains yielded a pretty long echo. Must've heard it bounce back easily 15-20 seconds after the shot. It was so loud, I had a neighbor over a mile away call me and ask if I was shooting on his land, because it sounded so close to him. :eek:
 
What you want is a short barrel so much of the powder is burned outside the barrel.
A powder that doesn't have additives that reduce muzzle flash and blast .
Lots of powder like one of the magnums .
Maybe a 338 Lapua with fast powder.:D

Sounds like the Obrez Nagant would work perfectly. The 7.62x54R could be considered a 'magnum' considering it is capable of generating in excess of 3200ft-lbs muzzle energy through a 29'' barrel, when hand loaded. Cut 20'' off the barrel and this is pretty much what you get.

The news articles all describe the gun as a pistol carrying blanks. Sure a rifle would have been louder but perhaps, acoustically a pistol was better...
 
Who knew that was a record that was actually kept track of. I'm actually surprised that the last one was only 15 seconds. That seems relatively short.
 
It doesn't take much to create an echo. I've created one off fairly distant mountains with a paintball gun (it was an old gun with an unported brass barrel). To create the best echo you want it focused downrange. So no porting, muzzle brakes, etc. You want it all coming out of the barrel and following the bullet.
