long thought about custom rifle moving towards build stage...

my retired buddy has an old French rifle we've been toying with as a project for me...

what I invisioned, was a magazine fed bolt action take down rifle with 2 barrels, one in a long range cartridge, one in a brush busting cartridge...

after weighing out the thoughts of many different cartridges ( originally based on the AR mag ) I think we are going to set it up for an FAL mag, which moves our cartridges into the .308 based cases...

longer range looks like it'll be 7-08, & the brush buster will be 358 Winchester

the rifle is an older custom job he did, that he chambered for 25-06 & made it into a take down rifle with a rock solid lock up mechanism... we're going to use his take down mechanism, & make a longer barrel in 7mm, & will have the scope mounted on the barrel & a carbine length barrel in 358, which will either have modern optics, or ghost ring & finber optic or similar fast, short distance sight... the gun will be set up to feed either cartridge from an FAL mag...

thoughts or suggestions ???
 
been so long since we talked about the actual rifle... I think it's a really solid MAS that he did some custom work on when he was a younger man... it currently wears a custom 2 piece stock & is chambered in 25-06 with a scout scope mount... he machined some steel as the locking part of the 2 piece design, that is integral with the fore arm...
 
Since the rifle is in 26-06 configuration already and the mag fits the 06 case, set up a barrel for 30/06 and hand load to higher performance than factory. You would be suprised at the performance the 06 will give when loaded to its potential. You will end up with something that can be used for varmits and for real long range, the 30-06 loaded up will outperform the 308. Cant ask for too much better than that. End result: 25/06 and 30/06.
 
yep... goal was 10 rounds or more in a bolt rifle... I know... kinda strange :o

BTW... I've already got 6-7 30-06 rifles

thoughts on this was a bolt action bug out gun of sorts... something with a little range ( was originally thinking 223... but 7-08 will work nicely ) & something with some punch ( was thinking 458 SOCOM, or 50 Beowulf ) but I think the 7-08 & 358 will work through the same mag, have the same bolt face etc.
