Long-Term Viability of 10mm?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a G20 10mm for a hiking/fishing gun (for possibility of irritated animals).

My question is, is the 10mm waining in popularity? I'm afraid of buying the gun and then in a year or so having trouble finding ammo.

Also, what is the most powerful ammo available for this gun? I know it's not a bear-stopper, but if I had to, maybe about 5-10 rounds into a black bear may change his mind.

Thanks for any help,
Steve

Well, ...

... according to the 9/01 issue of Shooting Times, there's a reported "sales spike" in 10mm ammo due primarily to continued sales of the G-20 (and probably the more concealable G-29 as well) and the Smith 610 revolver (with Smith reintroducing the 4" version) last year.

Hornady makes some pretty good bullets, and their 180gn XTP/JHP "full-load" ammo is launching @ 1150 fps. More recently, Texas Ammo (TA) released 4 loadings in 10mm - what they call their "10mm Express" line, meaning simply that it's loaded hotter than what you typically find. TA's 200gn FMJ load is supposed to be a Hornady FMJ-FP bullet launching @ 1250fps. Short of a .44 mag revolver, that's pretty good energy for an autoloader to put out.

Not bad for what the uninformed frequently call a "dead round."

HTH.

Just do a search on 10mm and you`ll find TONS of stuff on it. You`ll see that there are lots of folks that are still living with their heads in the sand, repeating what others told them years ago and lots who have 10mms,shoot 10mms and actually know something about it singing it`s praises. Corbon,Proload,Georgia Arms and other ammo makers are reporting that 10mm ammo sales have been climbing steadily for years. Several new full power loads have been introduced just this year. It`s a niche round to be sure but it has a lot to offer and it`s here to stay. One of the really great things about it is that like a .357 Revolver you can shoot a variety of factory loads from mild target stuff through self defense and up to near .41 magnum level all in a managable sized gun with a good magazine capacity. VS..45ACP+P? A .45 185gr.+P will step out at around 1100fps from a full sized gun and Corbon or Texas Ammo`s 180gr. 10mm loads will do 1320-1350fps. with a higher sectional density which means deeper penetration on big critters. Although neither is ideal for such things I`ll take 15rds. of Corbon 10mm 180gr.JSP Penetrators over 8rds. of .45ACP anything any day of the week. If you get the Glock 20 they also offer a drop in 6" "hunting barrel" that adds quite a bit of velocity to hot 10mm loads while adding very little weight or bulk. Marcus

The 10 mm cartridge has been "dead" for over a decade, if you are one to believe such a thing. Glock 20's seem to move pretty well around here.

Does anybody have a URL for Texas Ammo, or a source for them?

Good 10mm ammmo has about 150ft/lbs more energy than the .45 . That is in full power loads such as Proload or Georgia Arms. I like the powerful caliber and it will be viable for me for a very long time. I'm about ready to buy another 10mm soon. Probably a Glock 20 for hunting.

The 10mm seems to be similar to the 41 Magnum, loved by those who own and shoot them, completely misunderstood by those who don't. I doubt the 10 will ever be as popular as the 9mm, 40 S&W or 45ACP, but it will be around for years to come.

As a proud owner of 10mm and .41 revolvers - I must say I enjoy being misunderstood. I like them both and have uses for both. I wish S&W would make 4" AND a new 6 1/2" so I could have another.

The 10mm will be around for while all right. Although the .40 S&W was created with the intention of replacing it, the FBI's brainchild will exist for the same reason that the various flavors of .38 still exist: some folks just plain and simply want it. That's enough to make it worth the manufacturer's trouble.

I thought the 10mm was dead a few years after it was made, same with .41 mag, nothing will beat the 9mm, .45 acp and all .38s and .357s. but doesn't the FBI use a HK MP5 in .10mm?
would be a kicker of a sub-gun:cool: I've heard alot of bad about the.40 blowing up Glocks, but not the .10mm?

Go out with another 10mm shooter and lets some rounds go at the range. It never ceases to amaze me how many poeple have not shot the 10mm yet seem to know all about it. Also, when you let un-initated users shoot full load 10mm's, there is normally a shocked look from the recoil and power.

Yes the 10mm is viable, it is here to stay, and I believe more guns will be chambered in it over time.

A lot of handloaders I know who are willing to buy Smith & Wesson love their 610 revolvers. They're tough little suckers and allow for alot of experimentation. Unlike an auto, you don't have to worry about downloaded cartridges short-cycling or uploaded cartridges screwing up the springs, and if you want to shoot .40, you can just put them in.

I haven't gotten around to it yet but do intend on getting a 10mm. I'd like a Glock 20, but I may have a lead on some S&W 10mm's coming up for sale from a police dept that is switching. If the price is right I'll grab one.
