long shooting ducks

Hello friends !

the only cure for steady ducks on water at 60 yards , is double barrelled over-under or side by side , chambered 89 mm.( 3 1/2") loaded with winchester 2 ounce1/4 of shot 3 lead. Both barrels fired at the same time.

One and only shot from semiauto chambered 3 1/2" is not sufficient.
Try to believe, the goal is not the calibre but the quantity of pellets.
Obvious solution? yes , but a solution !

Franco, I disagree. One shot from a 3.5" 12 with high velocity steel shot size #2 or BB is enough. You just have to pattern the gun, find the choke that will put 3 or more pellets on the duck at that range, then become a good enough shot to hit them reliably. If I could use lead shot on ducks I could make that same shot 3 out of 5 times one the first shot with 12 guage 2 3/4" shells.

Franco:

In his Shotgunner's Notebook, Gene Hill, the late dean of American gun-writers, stated,

" I'm often surprised at how often a shooter who is relatively experienced seems to have only the most rudimentary idea of distance..."

"What little research exists in this area indicates that the greatest errors are in the critical line of 50 yards; too many shotgunners think that 65 is really 50 and too many think that they can ordinarily take birds at these ranges: wrong!!

"Of course, we've all seen birds killed at 50, 55, and 60 yards and rarely even a bit farther. But we've never seen it done regularly and we never will and not because it's impossible to establish the correct lead either, but because the laws of physics are against us. The statistics themselves aren't all that interesting, but you can take my word for it that the efficiency line of a full choke shotgun, perfectly matched with the shell it shoots best, using a heavy load of 4's or 5's, is drawn at 50 yards. Or ought to be! For steel shot, no matter the load, 45 yards is just plain it."

Gene goes on to say,

"I'm always pleased, as all of us are, to see someone shoot well, but even more pleased to see someone allow the right thing to happen even though in
our times of few chances and little opportunities, it is growing more and more difficult to stand there and do nothing--often the most positive act we can manage in the field.

"Having a good retriever is no excuse for having a day filled with sailing ducks and geese or anything else. Making one of those 65-yard shots is no excuse for thinking that skill had anything to do with it..."

"The next time you see someone 'chance' a shot at a bird smart enough to be out of range, and you see the bird hurt and set his wings to drift away, I hope you take a minute to imagine what the bird will be going through for the little while it will probably live--and I hope you'll be thankful that you're not the sort of person who would cause something like that to happen."

Make no mistake, Gene was a sportsman who thoroughly loved duck-hunting, but because he was a sportsman he knew the practical limitations of his equipment and strove to kill cleanly.

Good luck, and good shooting!

I would like to determine four situations, not well explained :

- I refer to killed birds, not wounded.
- I hunt in Italy, where we are not obliged to steel.
- I refer to ten and more ducks steady, not flying.
- I placed little reeds in the lake as reference mark of 35, 50, 60 yards, so I
know well the shooting's distance,

ciao a tutti, franco

You are talking of killing rafted ducks on the water at 60 yards, pulling both triggers at the same time?
This is so old that it is new to us. We used "punt guns".

taa, cs :D

excuse my bad english, I wanted to say ' shooting to immovable, steadfast ducks at 60 yards on water from blind' .
In Italy is not legal shoot punt guns, maximum caliber admitted is 12 gauge.

Ducks at 60 yards [or more] on the water or in the air is a bad idea even with lead shot, from a sporting view & from a safety viewpoint [ricochet off water].

What sport is it to "Arkansas" a skein of ducks sitting on the water... :barf: Unless your finishing off a cripple that's wounded. I've hunted ducks for over 30 years and every time i see or hear of someone who hunts like this and professes to be a "sportsman" i 'd like to bitch slap them.

HunterTRW - good post.

no, I'm not a sportsman when I'm hunting. I'm sportsman when run by bycicle,
when shooting trap and skeet against friends and other competitors, when there is challenge and premium, medals...

no, I don't shoot more than 60 yards, and my lake is larger than 1000 yards, I pay attention to ricochets.

Hunting is not only shooting. Shooting is the late act of an artistic way of ensnare the ducks. it's not easy to know and sow the right grass, call close the high flyers. It' s difficult put well the decoys and make blind by yourself...
I shoot flyers ducks only if I'm not able to convince them to come in my water and try to shoot no more than 40 45 yards. I don't like wound.
It's a mistake confound hunting and shooting,

Sportsman like conduct.

No I'm not a sportsman while hunting

Then why hunt?

Your original post your claim of shooting sitting waterfowl at 60 yards. It's a bad idea for reasons I've already stated.

Hunting is not only shooting
An artistic way of ensnaring ducks?? Oh, you mean shooting at sitting targets sounds like you have ZERO confidence in your shooting skills, except of course when your shooting trap or skeet for... premium and those medals...

Hunting and shooting are intrinsically linked while waterfowl hunting and the hunter is bound by ethics to provide whatever animal or winged creature the respect it deserves while in pursuit of such creature.

This is the way i was taught to hunt by my father - when i see posts that tout dangerous shooting habits and unsportsmanlike like conduct - I'll call you or any other member here out on it.

Welcome to TFL.

Excuse to members of forum : this seems a private polemics among
12-34hom and me.
I think that perhaps I was not able to explain my point of view, it will depend by language, not easy write in english, for me.
why hunt ? for the same reasons as you. I have just say that my target is not wound but kill, about ethics. hunting is not a sport. hunting may involve some actions of sport, but means to catch wild animals, by shotgun or snare, no difference.
Sport involves an improvement of performance versus me or others, relative to athletics, challenge, medals...means fatigue, classifications, records.
Shooting trap or skeet at Olimpics for a gold medal is a sport, means competition: the first , second and third laugh, the fourth cryes.
Shooting at ducks is a way of life.
I like shoot to waterfowls while they fly in the light of the day, but enjoy by night to call close, ensnare with decoys painted by hands...hunting with friends, live preparations, taste together after the day is gone. You and me hunt also without guns in hands, when prepare, discuss, go to buy shotshells, change camo apparel, look at late accessories for our passion. Artificial lake obliges me to work all the year in arrange water and dikes. Have you understand the difference, for me, between hunting and shooting?
You say that hunting and shooting are linked. Right ! it means that are two different configurations.
Also I have had a father who teach me the marvels of hunting. He liked to shoot at flyers birds, as me, but also boscimans have had fathers and they wound animal , pursue it till death. But they hunt for meat, we for fun.
Every type of hunting is wonderful; nowadays we are not able to think at hunting without guns, and the world of shotguns is marvellous.
it's better not speaking about zero confidence in shooting skills...are you twin of Tom Knapps ? Misses shots are salt and pepper of hunting; I remember
faults, not the skills.

Duck Hunting

Franco, my mother is from germany and my father is from luxembourg. My passion is waterfowl hunting. My thoughts are as yours. It is the friendships that grow, the hard work of preparation, the skills of the duck call, the feeling that your dog has made an unbelievable retrieve, the sunrise away from a city, the red wine and fresh served game, and the little feeling in your head that most people think your crazy for waking up at 3am to drive and boat in darkness all in the name of the duck. Any time you want to talk duck hunting feel free to email me at me1031@comcast.net
