I was thinking of purchasing a bolt action .308 for long range shooting, targets, small to large sized game animals etc. I wanted the .308 cause I love the specs on the round and the ammo is relatively inexpensive. For everything up to Elk/Moose, is this a good choice or should I look for something heavier?

Comments, opinions, advise?

There's no such thing as inexpensive ammo for a long range rifle. You're gonna have to handload to close to benchrest specs. I'd recommend the Savage M12BVSS-S for starters... Get the solid bottom receiver version - no magazine cut.

For long range work i chose a 6mm ack imp. [varmint work]

There are several calibers to chose from, but for retained energy at over 600 yards i would stay with 30 caliber. I would look at a 300 Winchester mag or 338 Win mag.

In relation to long range target shooting.
Military surplus rifle ammo is held to loose specs.
Mil surplus machingun ammo is held to even looser specs.

That bein said, Malaysian surplus machine gun ammo in my FAL will put meat on the table. Just have to work within the limits of the equipment.

For precision accuracy you are going to have to either load your own or spring for match ammo.

Sam..a day to remember, when stalked Antelope till within wrist rocket range.

USGI "White Box" Match Ammo (M852) is as accurate as you're going to get without reloading. Federal Match with Sierra 168gr Match King is essentially the same load. Neither is cheap!
