Long range scope... help

As I wrote earlier, I bought a Remington PSS. I know that becomming proficient at long range shooting is a challenge and expensive to boot. After looking at the scopes in shops near my home I liked the look of a 6.5-20 Nikon. It was a bit less expensive than the comparable Leopold. Now a local dealer has me wondering, for a little over $125 more SWFA will sell me a Leopold 6.5-20X40 w/AO, target knobs and EFR ?. Is Leopold that much better, I thought Nikon was a good company or is it just cameras?

Alex49,

Did you take a look at the Tasco SS while at SWFA? You might want to consider it; you could save some scratch and get a top notch scope. Just my .02

Both are good quality scope manufactures, you won't go wrong with either. Base on my personal experience, Nikon actually has a sharper image than Leupold under the same condition (objective size, magnification, and light condition). You mention that your main purpose is long range shooting, you must have a A/O. Also, Nikon has 38 moa of adjustment, Leupold has 44 moa. Both are not sufficient for extreme long range work. You will run out of scope about 600-700 yards. You might consider some other model that offer a greater amount of adjustment.

Leupold has always had the reputation of being pretty consistant with their products. Consistantancy (sp) equals accuracy, and their products have stood up to the test of time.
The newer long range models are great scopes. Finally we have a varible power scope with MK IV capabilities: lots of adjustments for W and E, 30mm tube, an easier focus knob to aquire. They are good out to the 1000, plus you have the option to have the scope boosted in power if you choose. Premier Reticle does work on Leupolds, and they are well established.
The tactical line of scopes are pretty well constructed, but be sure to get one with an A/O. These will reach out to the longer ranges. I have one without the A/O, and I think it tops out around 800 yds. Unfortunately I have not yet found out, but at 1000 we were advised not to shoot if we did not have the A/O, since the dial would be topped out and make the shots more difficult.
Another vote goes towards the Tasco SS. I had one in 16x but never mounted it cause I ran out of rifles. It is now mounted on a friend's rifle, who has been satisfied with its performance.

The Nikon has a sharper image,Don't believe me? Hold it beside the Leupold also,If you have a extra thousand bucks buy yourself a Nightforce scope from Bill Shehane at D&B supply in Charlotte,N.C. This is the scope the 1000yd.guys use in competition.Hope this helps,C.M.Rich Lam.3 22-24
