Long Range Rifle Dope

After an extended (10 year +) absence from any regular long range shooting (previously - varmint shooting out to 400 yards or so) I have acquired a Remington PSS in .308 and intend to get into some long range competition with a local rifle club. They have access to a military range with a K/D range out to 1000 yards.

I need some good web sites, similar in nature to THEFIRINGLINE, where I can go to bone-up on the latest stuff. Any suggestions?

Schmit,

It's not new - just "as new". Got it from a shooting buddy who wasn't using it. It was properly broken in and has a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10 Tactical with mil-dots in Smith Enterprises rings and on a Badger Ordnance 20 min tapered base. Rifle has about 200-300 rounds on it. Scope mounts are new - hasn't even been re-sighted yet.

The trigger is really nice - like OUNCES, and clean...are all PSS's that way? The previous owner said he didn't touch it!

I'll scan the post you mentioned and see if I can help.

PSS triggers are 6 lbs from factory

The previous owner is probably not telling the whole story. I've owned 6 PSS and all of them came with a 5-6 lbs trigger from the factory.

See if he replaced the trigger with a Shilen or Jewel trigger.

Since you just got the PSS, you might want to have a smith check the runout on the chamber for you. If the runout is less than .0015" you should be okay with accuracy. But if it's greater than .0025" your accuracy with factory loads will be adversely affected. But you could compensate for this if you plan on rolling your own ammo.

Check the muzzle for with a bore guage for tightness and the chamber for throat erosion and straightness.

Look at the bolt to see if the bolt face and the backside of the lugs have been polished. Also check to the torque on the action screws. They should be at 65 in/lbs.

The Remington actions are excellent bases to build out a tactical rifle. But their barrels leave a lot to be desired.
