Long Range Metal Target

Been looking to buy a long range metal target but to buy them its a small fortune. So I made my own yesterday and when doing research people said if you use a torch to cut the steel or weld on it you weaken the steel. Well thats not true. The target its self is 3/8" AR 400 steel plate all the round rod is 1' solid steel. Took it out today to try it out. At 530 yards with Remington 700 in .308 caliber the bullet hit the target with so much force it almost went horizontal. After a couple shots went down to see how much damage I did I didn't even dimple it. The best part was, you see the target move and 2 seconds later you hear the "Ping".

I'm no expert on steel targets, but I think weakening the target becomes more of a concern when you are shooting around 200 yards or less. I know at my range we had one at 400 yards and it got it hit countless times with multiple calibers without problem. Not sure why they eventually took it down, but just one day when I went it was gone. You're right, they are ridiculously expensive!

What an awesome range! More than a little jeoulous :) How well is the wind blocked?

wind not to bad cause of the high walls. I can shot up to 1/2 mile there slowly working my way back further. In this picture it is 900 yards to top of the wall in the corner

IIRC the weakening comes from the outside as the heat from the torch negates the heat treatment. I'll defer to the experts though that actually make the plates.
