Long Range Choke

Hi all.
I was wondering what choke is the best for long range shooting, itd be using #2 #3 #4 lead for shooting rabbits and other things at slightly longer ranges.
What choke will give me the longest range? and what kind of range can I expect?
The current choke if got is modified and it don't seem to have much range at all for rabbits.

Also is it safe to use buckshot through tight chokes, i know you cant use steels but what about buck shot?

Thanks
Sam

The choke determines the pattern by constricting the pellets in certain increments as they leave the barrel. A FULL choke will constrict the pellets for your application. They make chokes even tighter, typically for turkey hunting. In any event a trip to the pattern board is in order to determine what the choke is doing in your gun with the ammo you intend to use.

Good luck!

I have and swear by the pattern master chokes.

I bought an 835 awhile back that came with one. I gave it a try and it really works at keeping dense patterns at insanely long ranges with all loads from 0 steel to #8 birdshot.

I was knocking geese out of the sky at ranges my buddies would not even shoulder their shotguns for.

I have since sold that shotgun with the choke, but I have the patternmaster choke on my mossberg 500 and my remington 11/87 guns. the 11/87 was knocking doves at the sky this fall at 70 yards shooting 7 1/2 birdshot. The doves didn't know what hit them and they were not expecting to be shot at (and hit) that far away. They were still on straight on or lazy angles to the side and were not doing their aerial acrobatics yet.

The patternmaster choke is expensive at around 85-95 bucks, but i have scored mine on gunbroker or ebay for around the mid 40's...

AT 70 Yards ..... that's quite a shot my man ....

Let's put this in perspective....

The average Trap Target ( when you shoot from the 16 yard line / is about 30 - 35 yards from the shooter ...( or 14 - 19 yards from the trap house to where its broken )....

If you stand or shoot from the 27 Yard line ( at the back of the circle on a Trap field ) ---and shoot Trap singles ....you're killing them at around 27 + 19 or 46 yards ...from your feet ...which is not an easy shot for me...

so step back, into the parking lot another 24 Feet ...and call for that Trap bird ...and kill it at 70 Yards .... !! ( I can't see that far / let alone hit a target at 70 yards ) ....moving away from me ...). Well done my man !!

pretty easy shot since the doves were either straigh on or flying at a slight angle away and were being lazy about it, thinking that they were out of range (we were hunting in open desert over a stock pond so they were coming to us) and we had decoys.

long story short I bagged my limit that day in short order and spent most of the time looking in the brush from my downed birds. The choke does wonders and amazes all!

Pattern

UFrost: You have me very curious now about these chokes.
When you patterned this choke and the load, what distance did you pattern at and what was the %? I'm just looking to see how dense a FC pattern can be. at the standard distances. Thanks in advance.
Pete

the density depends on the type of shot used.

for things like 00 or 0 buckshot it was 100% at 50yds.

for things like #4 and 6 I didn't bother to count all the pellet holes, but it is safe to say that way more than enough shot was on target at 50 and 75 yards

like i said before, I would have never bought one to begin with (don't see the need to spend a lot on choke tubes), but one came on a gun I bought. After trying out the tube, I was sold (along with anyone that hunts with me when i have the patternmaster tubes on my guns).

shop around as you will occasionally see these on eBay and gunbroker.
