Long Range Build

Alright so fall semester of 2013 at Pine Tech gunsmithing school is barreling and chambering. Each student does 3 barrels, the last being a master barrel. For my first two i would like to do 260 ack imp, and 6.5x47 lapua BR. Now, I've always wanted to build a big bench gun and i figured if im going big i might as well go unreasonably huge. I've wanted a barrett since i was like 10, but im not pleased with the performace of the 50BMG.......i mean.....theres better out there. So what was the most logical round? The .416 barrett! I've contacted McMillan about purchasing a McBros 50MG single shot action and inquired about a gunsmithing student discount and im waiting to hear on a price. The barrel will come from Saturn or Krieger (im know both owners on a personal level) and will be 2" contoured to 1.75" and be about 34" long. The brake will be hand made and my own original design. The trigger will also be my own design. I have to find a company that sells custom sized laminate stock blanks so i can get one thats large enough, otherwise ill just buy 2 or three and accru-glass them together to make the stock beefy enough.

There are lots of guys building long range bench guns. Take a long hard look at what they are doing... because their stuff works. These guys have been at it for many years and if there was a magic combination of parts that made the clouds part and angels sing they would be using it. Instead the magic is acute attention to detail. As a student you might be better off blueprinting 5 Remington 700s for the experience than dropping the price of your education into one gun.

A bit out of my pay grade, but doesn't the best "performance" in the ELR game depend on the distance you're talking about?

From my understanding, the .416 is more efficient because of it's higher velocity at "shorter" :rolleyes: ranges. But at extra long ranges, the .50 BMG surpasses it.

No other bullet I'm aware of has a BC of 1.05 like the 750 grain .50 Amax.

TheGunGuy762, after Barney Lawton pass away his son took over the business and there been ups and downs in that business. I think Dave Tooley was helping him out not sure how long that lasted and that's part of the reason for those action low prices.

I would put 338 Lapua as the top on my list.

The 50 is used more as an anti material weapon (though also some sniper work).


338 Lapua is the true long range sniper round that was designed from the ground up as just that. Not big game, pure long range accuracy for a hit.
 
When you graduate and head out to the real world you'll find you will mostly use Rem 700 actions.
So why don't you build a "high end" hunting rifle in 7mm rem mag? It has been on an ascending trail as of late.
Just ask Aaron Davidson, his "Gunwerks" company specializes in those types of rifles, and they seem to do pretty well for theirselves.

But if it has to be a longrange type of cartridge and built on a large caliber, I'd go 338 Lupua also.
