Long Actions and Short Actions????

Hello Guy's,
Im not very knowledgeable in the area of rifle's and Im in the market to get .243 to start with..
Here is my question I noticed with some Savage rifles, Sako rifles and Tikka rifles they have long actions for every caliper... How is that possible? What I mean is how do you get positive feeds with short casing rounds like a .223 and .243 when you have a long action which is meant for longer casing rounds like the .270 and .300.
Also what do you guys know about these three rifles.... 1) The Savage
110 package series rifles w/scope and sling.
2) The Savage 11 Hunter series rifle with either a detatchable Mag. or without one.
3) And last but certainly not least the Remington 700BDL... Im looking for strength, reliablilty and most of all accuracy...
I know that the trigger on most Savage's are horrible so you dont have to mention that..
    All opinions are welcome...
Thanks for your help...

Don't know about that particular model but they used to just put a block in the magazine on some rifles to allow for the shorter cartridges. :(

Tikka and Sako both come in different action lengths -- 5 for Sako, 2 for Tikka. So the .243 is being used in an action that is suited for the cartridge. Same with Remington rifles and, I believe, Savage.

It is quite possible however to use a shorter length cartridge in a longer action. For example, Remington and Tikka's short action is a little long for the .17 or 223. Remington solves the problem by using an insert in the magazine that pushes the rounds forward. The bolt strips the round off and into the chamber. Tikka's magazine in .223 is the same size as a .243 but has a molded insert to push the cartridges forward.

I have a Savage "package deal" in 30-06,I really like mine.I am going to upgrade my scope in the near future to make it a better paper shooter but the one that comes on it would be good enough for deer hunting.I am getting 2 - 6 inch, 5 shot groups with mine with only maybe a total of 300 shots thru a big rifle like a 30-06.There is a few sites around like www.varminthunters.com in the tech section that shows and tells you how to reduce your trigger down to 3lbs. by turning a screw or two.Mine breaks at 3 1/2 lbs.I would like to get one in .243 in the future too.

I bought mine used (very little) at a gun store for $299.Had the trigger pull weighed by a guy who runs a range i frequent. But if i ever bought a new one with a heavy trigger i would dare to adjust its weight. At the link i provided(varmints)it shows how to do it.Think its under the tech section at www.varminthunters.com The one i would attempt would be by turning screws, not stoning the sear, etc.
